Chapter 10 - The Noon InspectionThe crisp, arrogant footsteps of Inspector Robert Vance echoed down the sterile corridors of Ward A. (No relation to Arthur, though the coincidence always amused the hospital director.) Robert flashed his state badge at the security checkpoint, flanked by two municipal health officers carrying digital meters.

"Dr. Vance," Inspector Robert said, shaking Arthur’s hand with a grip that reeked of bureaucratic entitlement. "We’ve been receiving very strange data packets regarding your facility's energy and air consumption. It's almost as if an entire underground complex is siphoning power from the main grid."
Arthur offered a calm, welcoming smile, gesturing to the seating area in his office. "An old building comes with old ghosts, Inspector. Faulty wiring, ancient ventilation pockets left over from the sanitarium days. We’re in the process of sealing them permanently."
"Words don't pass audits, Doctor," Robert replied sharply, dropping a thick folder onto the desk. "I want to inspect the lower levels myself. Right now."
"I’m afraid that's impossible," Arthur said smoothly, leaning back in his leather chair. "The lower levels are structurally compromised. A cave-in occurred three days ago near Sector 4. It’s a safety hazard."
"Then we'll bring our own structural engineers," Robert snapped, standing up. "Lead the way to the access hatch."
Before Arthur could answer, a piercing, unearthly shriek echoed through the ventilation shafts overhead. It didn't sound human. It sounded like a hybrid of a low-frequency mechanical grind and a newborn's wail.

Inspector Robert froze, his hand hovering over his briefcase. "What in God's name was that?"
Arthur smiled faintly, standing up and buttoning his lab coat. "Just the building settling, Inspector. Shall we go look at the boiler room?"
