Chapter 9 - The Crimson LogbookThe ink on the morning log was still wet, but Arthur’s hand didn’t shake as he signed off on the night shift reports. The adrenaline of the previous night had settled into a cold, methodical hum in his veins. He wasn't just managing a hospital anymore; he was managing a closed loop of evolutionary destiny.

Nurse Higgins stood by the door, tapping a pen against her clipboard. "Dr. Vance, the district health inspector is scheduled for an unexpected walkthrough at noon. They’re demanding to inspect the sub-level utility shafts due to the anomalous air pressure reports."

Arthur didn't look up from his desk. "Tell them the keys to the sub-level were lost during the renovation of '82. If they insist, direct them to the north wing boiler room. Let them wander around the steam pipes until they get bored."

"And the newborn in Ward B?" Higgins pressed, her voice dropping to a cautious whisper. "Social services is threatening to get a court order to separate the child from Eleanor. They claim the environment isn't fit for human development."

Arthur slowly raised his gaze, his eyes narrowing. "Human development? Higgins, who do you think defines what 'human' is? That child stays with its mother. If anyone from social services steps foot near Ward B, page me immediately."

As Higgins backed out of the office, Arthur opened his bottom drawer. He brushed past the steel plague mask and pulled out a heavy, leather-bound book with no title on the spine. It was the master lineage ledger.

Arthur traced his finger over the ink. The experiment wasn't failing; it was accelerating. And the inspector coming at noon was going to find out just how deep the rabbit hole went.
