Chapter 11 - Echoes in the Steam PipesThe heat in the sub-level boiler room was suffocating, thick with the smell of boiling rust and sulfur. Inspector Robert wiped sweat from his forehead, coughing as he shined his heavy industrial flashlight into the labyrinth of massive iron pipes.

"This makes no sense," Robert muttered, checking his digital air monitor. "The thermal readout from outside showed a massive heat signature thirty yards behind this wall. But this is just solid concrete."

"As I told you, Inspector, the architectural blueprints from 1954 are notoriously inaccurate," Arthur said, standing near the entrance with his hands tucked neatly into his coat pockets. "My maintenance team has tried mapping it, but the structural shifting makes it a labyrinth."

Suddenly, one of the municipal health officers—a young man named Miller—gasped, dropping his tool kit. "Sir... look at the pipe."

Robert and Arthur stepped closer. Etched directly into the thick insulation foam of the main steam pipe was a fresh, jagged set of claw marks. Deep grooves cut into the metal itself, oozing a thick, luminescent blue fluid that sizzled against the hot surface.

"That's not rust," Miller whispered, his voice trembling. "That's biological."

Arthur stared at the blue fluid, his heart skipping a beat. It wasn't human blood. It was the nutrient compound used in the original Project Genesis incubators. Someone down in the hidden catacombs had just fed.

Inspector Robert turned slowly toward Arthur, his eyes narrowed with sudden suspicion. "You’ve been lying to the state, Vance. What are you breeding down here?"

Before Arthur could formulate a lie, the heavy steel access door behind them slammed shut with a thunderous BANG, automatically locking from the outside. The emergency lights flickered once, twice, and then plunged the entire boiler room into absolute darkness.
