Chapter 2 - The Echoes of a Phantom WarA Ghost from the Past and the Broken VowDominic didn't hesitate. He pulled the trigger.

The bullet tore straight through the lead operative’s throat before the man could finish his sentence. Blood sprayed across the white tiles. Before the other three hitmen could raise their submachine guns, Dominic ducked behind a heavy medical cart, slamming it violently into the second operative's knees.

The room erupted into close-quarters chaos. Glass IV bags shattered, alarms blared, and muzzle flashes lit up the dimly red-lit room. Dominic moved with terrifying, practiced lethal precision. He grabbed the second man's weapon arm, snapped his elbow backward with a sickening crack, and put two rounds into his chest.

The third gunman backed off, firing wildly into the ceiling, but Dominic lunged over the examination table, driving a surgical scalpel directly into the man’s subclavian artery.

The final operative sprinted out the door into the dark hallway. Dominic didn't chase him. He spun back to the bed.

Elena’s eyes were wide open. She was conscious, but her body was entirely paralyzed—trapped inside her own skin, tears streaming down her temples, her chest barely rising.

"Hold on, sweetheart," Dominic muttered, throwing her frail body over his shoulder like he was retrieving priceless cargo from a sinking ship.

He breached the emergency staircase just as heavy boots echoed from the main lobby. His top enforcer, Marcus, met him at the sub-basement exit, holding open the door of a bulletproof SUV.

"Boss! What the hell happened up there?" Marcus yelled, laying down suppressing fire into the hallway. "The whole city is going up in flames! The Castellano family just declared war on us!"

"Drive!" Dominic roared, hauling Elena into the back seat and slapping an epinephrine auto-injector into her thigh. "Drive to the safehouse in Blackwood Creek!"

"Boss... the Castellanos say you poisoned Elena!" Marcus yelled over the squeal of tires as they peeled out into the rainy night. "Old Man Castellano put a fifty-million-dollar bounty on your head! Half our lieutenants are already defecting!"

In the back of the roaring SUV, Elena gasped violently as the epinephrine hit her system. Her lungs expanded, and the paralytic began to recede. She grabbed Dominic's lapels with surprising, desperate strength.

"Dominic... you... you shouldn't have saved me," she sobbed, her voice trembling with sheer terror. "You don't understand what they've done!"

"Explain it to me then!" Dominic commanded, holding her face in his hands. "Why do you have the Syndicate's mark on your chest? Why did your father give you to me?"

Elena stared at him, her eyes dark with a lifetime of hidden agony.

"I am not Victor Castellano's daughter," she confessed, her voice shaking the foundation of everything Dominic knew. "I was a plant. A sleeper asset raised by the Syndicate, given to Castellano to sell to you. My real name is Elena Vance. My father... was the man who ordered the hit on your mother."

Dominic felt the blood drain from his face. The world seemed to stop moving.

"And the contract?" Dominic asked, his voice deathly quiet.

"If I ever confessed my love for you," Elena whispered, a tear dropping onto his wrist, "the Syndicate's protocol dictates that my real father executes your entire bloodline. For seven years... I fought my own heart to keep you alive."
