Chapter 1 - The Longest Night

The click of the deadbolt echoed through the cabin like a gunshot.

Elena Hart stood frozen against the heavy oak door, her heart hammering against her ribs. She was a country nurse, used to treating frostbite, tractor accidents, and the occasional hunting mishap. She was not used to treating men with military-grade bullet wounds who talked about corrupt sheriffs.

"What is your name?" Elena demanded, keeping her voice low so as not to frighten the little boy shivering by the wood stove.

The man didn't answer immediately. He gritted his teeth as she applied fresh pressure to the wound, a low, animalistic growl escaping his throat. "Dante," he finally rasped, his dark eyes locking onto hers with terrifying intensity. "And my son is Leo. If you want to live to see tomorrow, Nurse, you will turn off every light in this house. Now."

Before Elena could move, a low rumble vibrated through the floorboards. It wasn't thunder. It was the sound of heavy engines cutting through the howling blizzard.

Elena rushed to the window, wiping the condensation from the glass. Her breath caught in her throat. Through the swirling white darkness, headlights were appearing. Two. Four. Six. The beams of light cut through the pine trees like searchlights.

"They tracked the blood," Dante hissed, trying to push himself up from the floor. He collapsed back down with a groan, his face turning deathly pale. "They aren't the police. They're Julian’s rivals. The Varga syndicate. They don't leave witnesses."

"Julian..." Elena whispered, the name tasting like ash in her mouth. "You mentioned Julian. Julian Hart?"

Dante looked up, his bloody fingers gripping the leg of the kitchen table. "How do you know that name?"

Elena felt the world tilt beneath her feet. "He’s my estranged brother. I haven't seen him in ten years."

Suddenly, the front porch light—the one that had been flickering—shattered into a thousand pieces. A heavy boot slammed against the front door, making the entire cabin shudder. Leo screamed, clutching his wooden wolf tight to his chest.

CHAPTER 1 HOOK: The enemies weren't just hunting a mafia boss; they were hunting her family. And they were already on the porch.
