Chapter 3 - The Traitor's Price

Julian walked up the steps, his boots crunching loudly on the frozen blood. He didn't rush. He knew they had nowhere to go. Behind him, dozens of heavily armed men stood at the ready.
"Elena!" Julian called out, his voice devoid of any brotherly warmth. "Open the door. Don't make this messy. You were always the smart one. Just give me Dante and the kid, and you can walk away."
Elena stood behind the door, tears stinging her eyes. "You bastard! He’s a child, Julian! Your boss's child!"
"Dante isn't my boss anymore," Julian sneered. "He's a dead man walking. The syndicate is under new management. Now open the door, or I burn the cabin down with all of you inside."
Inside, Elena desperately looked around. She was a nurse; she knew how the human body worked, and she knew Dante was minutes away from dying of internal bleeding. She needed to buy time. She needed a miracle.
She knelt beside Dante, who was barely conscious. "Dante, look at me. I need to cauterize the wound to stop the bleeding, or you won't survive the next ten minutes. It’s going to hurt."
Dante gave a weak nod. Elena rushed to the wood stove, grabbing a heavy metal poker that had been sitting in the embers, glowing a fierce, angry red.
"Hold him down," she muttered to herself, though there was no one to help her. She pressed the glowing metal directly into the bullet wound.
Dante’s body convulsed. He bit down on his own sleeve to muffle a scream of pure agony, his veins popping against his forehead before he finally blacked out from the pain. The smell of burning flesh filled the room, but the bleeding stopped.
Just then, the front door was blown off its hinges by a shotgun blast.

Julian stepped through the smoke, a cruel smile on his face. "Time's up, sis."
