Chapter 2 - The Silent Siege

"Get the boy into the root cellar. Now!" Dante commanded, his voice raspy but commanding.

Elena didn't argue. She grabbed Leo, who was trembling violently, and lifted the hidden trapdoor beneath the kitchen rug. "Stay down here, Leo. Don't make a sound, no matter what you hear," she whispered, kissing his cold forehead before slamming the door shut and sliding the heavy rug back over it.

She turned back to Dante. He had managed to drag himself against the wall, a sleek, black semi-automatic pistol drawn from beneath his coat. His hands were shaking from blood loss, but his gaze was deadly.

CRACK.

A bullet shattered the kitchen window, showering them in glass. The freezing wind roared into the house.

"Come out, Dante!" a booming voice yelled from the darkness outside. "We know you're in there! And we know the pretty little nurse is helping you. Hand over the boy and the ledger, and maybe we'll let the woman die quick!"

Elena's blood ran cold. The ledger. Her brother Julian had always been a numbers guy, a brilliant accountant who disappeared into the corporate underworld a decade ago. Now she realized what kind of corporations he had been working for.

"I don't have the ledger," Dante yelled back, his voice echoing in the small cabin. He looked at Elena and whispered, "In my coat pocket. A flash drive. Take it."

Elena reached into his soaked coat and pulled out a heavy metal USB drive encased in a waterproof seal.

"If I don't make it," Dante whispered, his grip on her hand loosening as he began to slip into shock, "get Leo to the docks in Portland. Ask for 'The Captain.' He will protect him."

Outside, the engines roared louder. The headlights multiplied. Elena peeked through the broken window. The blizzard was clearing, and what she saw made her breath freeze in her lungs. The cabin was completely surrounded. Dozens of black SUVs were idling in the snow, forming a massive, unbreakable perimeter.

And stepping out of the lead vehicle was a man she thought she'd never see again. Her brother, Julian. But he wasn't there to save them. He was holding a assault rifle, pointed directly at her door.

CHAPTER 2 HOOK: The mastermind behind the hit wasn't a rival syndicate. It was the brother she had spent a decade mourning.
