Chapter 6 - The Blood Covenant

"Back off!" Julian screamed, his eyes wild with desperation. "Back off or I slit her throat! I want a helicopter! I want safe passage out of the country, or my sister dies right here!"
Don Vittorio didn't blink. He didn't even raise his weapon. He simply looked at Elena. "Nurse Hart, you have shown incredible bravery tonight. Do you trust me?"
Elena, with a knife pressed hard against her windpipe, looked past her brother’s maddened eyes and saw Dante slowly raising his gun from the floor, his vision focusing through the pain.
"I trust the family that protects their own," Elena said clearly.
In a split-second movement, Elena slammed her elbow backward into Julian's broken ribs—a weak spot she had noticed earlier when he walked in stiffly. Julian gasped in pain, his grip loosening for a fraction of a second.
BANG.
A single shot rang out from the floor. Dante’s bullet struck Julian cleanly through the shoulder, spinning him around and knocking him to the ground. Before he could recover, Vittorio’s men rushed in, pinning Julian to the floorboards.
The siege was over. The snow was stained red, but the family was safe.
Three Months Later...The small cabin in the woods was gone, replaced by a secure, beautiful estate on the coast of Maine. Elena no longer wore the faded scrubs of a country nurse. She stood on the balcony, watching Leo play in the yard with his wooden wolf, completely safe and happy.
A pair of strong arms wrapped around her waist from behind. Dante, fully healed, pressed a soft kiss to her neck.
"My father wants to give you your own medical clinic," Dante whispered. "Anywhere in the world. As a thank you for that night."
Elena smiled, turning around in his arms. "I think I like it right here. But what about Julian?"
Dante's expression turned serious. "He’s serving a life sentence in a place where we control the guards. He will never hurt anyone again. You saved us, Elena. You're part of the family now."

Elena looked out over the ocean as the sun rose, reflecting off the water. She had started that freezing night as a simple nurse trying to survive a blizzard. Now, she was the protected queen of the most powerful empire in the country, and no one would ever dare cross her path again.
