CHAPTER 2 – The Impossible Face Inside the Ultrasound

The room went completely silent.

Emma blinked.

"I'm sorry..."

She forced a nervous laugh.

"What do you mean... someone else?"

Nobody laughed back.

Dr. Harrison slowly rotated the monitor toward the specialists.

The blurry ultrasound image filled the screen.

At first...

Emma saw only the four babies.

Then the doctor enhanced the contrast.

A strange shadow appeared between them.

Not another baby.

Not a tumor.

Not an imaging error.

It looked...

Almost human.

Daniel frowned.

"What am I looking at?"

One radiologist whispered,

"It has defined facial symmetry..."

Another replied,

"Impossible."

The technician's hands were shaking.

She had performed over twelve thousand ultrasounds.

She had never seen anything remotely similar.

Dr. Harrison ordered another machine.

A newer one.

Higher resolution.

"If this is equipment failure," he said, "we'll know immediately."

Emma's breathing became shallow.

The second scan began.

The image appeared.

Again...

Four healthy babies.

And again...

The same shadow.

Only this time...

It was clearer.

A face.

Tiny.

Perfectly outlined.

Its eyes appeared closed.

Its mouth almost seemed to smile.

Daniel stepped backward.

"This isn't real..."

The room fell into terrified silence.

One specialist quietly suggested transferring Emma to a university hospital.

Another wanted emergency genetic testing.

A third insisted the image violated everything modern medicine understood.

Emma burst into tears.

"Are my babies okay?"

Dr. Harrison looked at her with genuine compassion.

"Your babies are healthy."

She exhaled in relief.

"But..."

His hesitation made everyone's stomach drop.

"We're no longer trying to understand your pregnancy."

He stared one last time at the frozen ultrasound.

"We're trying to understand why this image matches a medical record from exactly twenty-five years ago."

Daniel frowned.

"What record?"

The doctor slowly opened an old digital archive.

An ultrasound taken decades earlier appeared beside Emma's.

The room gasped.

The mysterious face...

Was identical.

Same shape.

Same eyes.

Same impossible smile.

The name on the old file made Dr. Harrison's hands tremble.

He whispered,

"Emma..."

She looked up.

"...this ultrasound belongs to your mother."

Emma froze.

May you like

"But..."

"My mother died before I was born."
