CHAPTER 4 – The Woman at the Gate

Daniel drove faster than he ever had before.
Emma sat beside him, clutching the old hospital photo in both hands.
Four babies inside her.
A mother she thought was dead.
A father who had lied for twenty-five years.
And that impossible face on the ultrasound.
Nothing made sense anymore.
When they reached the mansion gates, police cars were already there.
Emma’s father, Richard Carter, stood in the driveway wearing his expensive black suit.
Calm.
Controlled.
Dangerously calm.
Beside him stood an elderly woman wrapped in a worn coat.
Claire.
Emma opened the car door before Daniel could stop her.
“Mom?”
The woman turned.
Her eyes filled instantly.
“Emma…”
That one word destroyed twenty-five years of lies.
Emma ran to her.
Claire held her daughter with shaking arms, sobbing like someone who had been waiting a lifetime.
“I tried to find you,” Claire cried. “I never stopped.”
Richard’s voice cut through the moment.
“Step away from her, Emma.”
Emma slowly turned.
“You told me she was dead.”
Richard adjusted his cufflinks.
“She was dead to this family.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“You stole a newborn baby from her mother.”
Richard smiled coldly.
“I protected my daughter from a mentally unstable woman.”
Claire shook her head.
“You drugged me. You forged the papers. You paid the judge.”
Emma felt dizzy.
Then Richard looked at her stomach.
His smile disappeared.
“You shouldn’t have gotten pregnant.”
The words were so strange that even Daniel froze.
Emma whispered, “What does that mean?”
Richard looked toward the police officers.
Then back at Claire.
“The Carter bloodline was never supposed to continue.”
Claire’s face went pale.
“Richard… don’t.”
But he kept speaking.
“Tell her what really happened twenty-five years ago.”
Claire began shaking.
Emma held her belly.
“Tell me.”
Claire took a step closer.
“When I was pregnant with you… the doctors saw the same face in my ultrasound.”
Emma’s heartbeat pounded in her ears.
Claire whispered,
“It wasn’t a baby.”
Daniel frowned.
“Then what was it?”
Before Claire could answer, the mansion lights suddenly went out.
Every window turned black.
Then Emma’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered with trembling hands.

A child’s voice whispered through the speaker:
“Mommy… we’ve been waiting.”
