CHAPTER 3 – The File That Was Never Supposed to Exist

Emma stared at the old ultrasound record like the room had vanished around her.

Her mother’s name was there.

Claire Carter.

Date: twenty-five years ago.

Same hospital.

Same doctor’s signature.

And on the frozen image…

The same strange little face.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Emma… did you know about this?”

Emma shook her head slowly.

“My father told me my mother died before I was born.”

Dr. Harrison’s expression changed.

“Emma… that isn’t what this file says.”

Her breath caught.

“What does it say?”

The doctor hesitated.

Then he turned the monitor toward her.

Under Claire Carter’s medical notes were three words that made Emma’s knees go weak.

Patient discharged alive.

Emma whispered, “No…”

Daniel reached for her, but she pulled away.

“My whole life… my father said she died giving birth to me.”

The doctor kept scrolling.

Then he stopped.

Another note appeared.

Infant transferred. Identity sealed by court order.

Emma’s voice broke.

“Infant? Me?”

No one answered.

The nurse quietly left the room.

Minutes later, she returned with a locked paper file from the hospital archive.

It was yellowed with age.

Stamped in red ink:

DO NOT RELEASE WITHOUT AUTHORIZATION.

Dr. Harrison opened it.

Inside was one photograph.

A newborn baby.

A hospital bracelet.

And beside the baby…

A woman lying in the bed, weak but alive.

Emma covered her mouth.

It was her mother.

Claire.

Alive.

Holding her.

But behind Claire stood a man Emma recognized instantly.

Her father.

Richard Carter.

Only he wasn’t smiling.

He was signing papers.

And the document in his hand had one chilling title:

Custodial Transfer Agreement.

Daniel’s face hardened.

“Your father took you from her.”

Emma backed against the wall.

“No… he raised me. He loved me.”

But her voice sounded unsure now.

Dr. Harrison pulled out one final page.

His hands trembled as he read it.

“Claire Carter attempted to refuse transfer. Patient became hysterical. Security called.”

Emma’s eyes filled with tears.

“My mother didn’t abandon me…”

The room became painfully quiet.

Then Daniel’s phone buzzed.

One text message.

Unknown number.

He opened it.

The message contained only six words:

Do not let Emma go home.

Below it was a photo.

A woman standing outside their house.

Older.

Thin.

Gray-haired.

But Emma knew her face from the hospital photo.

Claire Carter.

May you like

Her mother.

Alive.
