Chapter 3 - THE WEB OF ISOLATIONEvelyn’s campaign to sever Arthur from his support system was a masterclass in psychological warfare. She didn't throw tantrums or openly pick fights; instead, she used the weapon of subtle, corrosive poison.

It started with Marcus. The seasoned corporate attorney had been suspicious of Evelyn from the moment Arthur introduced them, noting the lightning-fast romance and the suspiciously spotless background check.
"Arthur," Marcus warned over a glass of scotch in the mansion’s private study. "I’m just saying, be careful. Prenup or no prenup, women like her know how to work the legal system. She came from nothing, and now she’s sitting on top of billions."
"You're just cynical, Marcus," Arthur replied, laughing off the warning with the arrogance of a man who believed he controlled every room he entered.
Evelyn played her part to perfection. She entered the study carrying a tray of artisanal cookies, wearing an apron that projected old-fashioned domestic bliss, and burst into fake tears the moment Marcus left, accusing him of insulting her honor and implying she was a gold-digger. Arthur, wracked with guilt for doubting his pure-hearted new wife, immediately distanced himself from his oldest friend.
Next came Claire, Arthur’s sister. Claire saw right through the velvet curtain during a Sunday family dinner. When Evelyn handed Mayia a plate of food, Claire noticed the child flinch and pull her sleeves down tightly over her wrists.
"Why did the girl flinch like that?" Claire snapped, slamming her wine glass down on the mahogany table. "Evelyn, what goes on in this house when Arthur isn't looking?"
Evelyn lowered her head, her voice trembling with manufactured fragility. "Claire... I know you miss your late sister. I know no one could ever measure up to her. But I love Mayia with all my heart. If you think I’m abusing her, please, Arthur, check the security cameras. Check them right now!"

Arthur, enraged by his sister’s hostility and moved by Evelyn’s theatrical vulnerability, ordered Claire to leave the house and never return uninvited.
With Marcus silenced and Claire banished, Evelyn stood alone at the center of the web. The Vance mansion was now an echo chamber of her design, and Arthur was completely blind to the monster sharing his bed.
