Chapter 4 - THE WHISPERS IN THE DARKMonths melted into a suffocating routine. To the public, the Vance family was the epitome of modern perfection. Tabloids featured glowing spreads of Evelyn attending charity galas in custom haute couture, holding a tightly smiling Mayia by the hand, while Arthur looked on like a proud, besotted king.

Behind closed doors, the psychological torture escalated. Evelyn knew how to leave no physical evidence that doctors or questioning teachers could trace, focusing instead on breaking Mayia’s spirit. The little girl stopped talking entirely, retreating into a shell of terror.

Arthur grew increasingly stressed, not from his marriage, but from a hostile corporate takeover looming over Vance Industries. A mysterious anonymous buyer was quietly buying up millions of shares on the open market, threatening to outvote Arthur and seize control of the board.

One stormy midnight, Arthur woke up to the sound of soft weeping coming from the hallway. Thinking it was Mayia suffering from a nightmare, he stepped out of the master bedroom in his silk bathrobe.

As he neared the top of the grand staircase, he heard voices whispering from the dimly lit guest corridor. One voice belonged to Evelyn—but it didn't sound like the gentle, honeyed tone she used with him. It was cold, sharp, and dripping with venom.

"...just hold on a little longer," Evelyn hissed into a burner phone. "The old fool trusts me completely. Once I get my name on the secondary trust fund documents next week, we can trigger the final phase. Vance Industries will be ours, and he won't even realize he signed his own death warrant."

Arthur froze. Blood rushed in his ears like a roaring freight train. His heart hammered against his ribs as the velvet curtain he had lived behind began to tear apart, thread by horrifying thread.
