Chapter 11 - The Secret Ledger

The morning sun washed over the kitchen island, illuminating the thick stack of financial documents Clara had brought the night before. While the federal agents had carted away the intruders and secured the perimeter, the true battle was just beginning.
I sat with a cup of dark roast coffee, scrolling through the encrypted drive Clara had unlocked.
"Look at this, Clara," I said, pointing to a string of offshore shell companies registered in the Cayman Islands. "This isn't just about Nathan or Linda. This entire network was funneling millions through dummy corporations disguised as charity funds."
Clara nodded, gently rocking her toddler son, Leo, who was munching on a piece of toast. "Linda was the mastermind behind the recruitment phase. She scoped out wealthy, independent women—especially single mothers who owned their homes outright—while Nathan played the role of the devoted, doting partner."
"Well, their operational playbook just blew up in their faces," I replied, a fierce smile playing on my lips. "They thought they could target me. Now, we’re going to dismantle their entire financial empire from the root."
Just then, my phone buzzed on the counter. It was an incoming call from an unknown, heavily encrypted number.
I signaled for quiet, slid the call onto speaker, and answered. "This is Sharon Vance."
A smooth, chillingly calm voice filtered through the static. "Ms. Vance. You've made quite a mess of our family business. Nathan was a fool, yes, but you hold assets that belong to a much larger ecosystem. I suggest we negotiate before things get... unpleasant for your children."
My blood turned to ice, but my voice remained flat, steady, and razor-sharp.
"If you ever mention my children again," I whispered, every syllable coated in venom, "I won't just leak your offshore accounts to the FBI. I’ll personally code an open-source bot that strips every single dummy corporation you own down to zero by noon. Try me."
Click. The line went dead.

I looked up at Clara, whose eyes were wide with shock. "You... you hung up on Viktor Vance? He’s the head of the syndicate!"
"Good," I said, standing up and grabbing my blazer. "Now he knows I’m not negotiating. Ben, girls! Pack your overnight bags. We're taking a trip."
