Chapter 17 - A New Horizon"Mom! Are you coming out or what?" Ben yelled from the backyard, bouncing the basketball against the pavement. "Clara’s making her famous lemon bars, and the twins are eating them all!"

I laughed, shaking my head as I stood up from the desk.

"Coming!" I called out, stepping out through the French doors into the crisp autumn air.

The girls immediately abandoned their garden trowels, running over to tackle me around the waist, their giggles bubbling up into the afternoon breeze. Clara waved from the patio table, holding up a plate of golden-brown pastries with a warm, triumphant grin. Ben tossed the basketball high into the air toward me.

I caught it cleanly with one hand, spinning it against my fingertips with practiced ease, and shot a smooth, arching three-pointer straight through the net.

Swish.

Ben cheered loudly, throwing his hands up in the air. "Okay, okay! Remind me never to challenge my mom to a basketball shootout ever again!"

"You never stood a chance, kiddo," I smiled, pulling my children close into a tight, protective embrace.

The past was buried. The threats were neutralized. Our future was wide open, bright, and completely written by our own hands.
