Chapter 8 - The Syndicate's ShadowI ushered Clara and her little boy into the kitchen, pouring steaming mugs of tea while my mind raced at a hundred miles an hour. Ben and the girls were asleep upstairs, completely unaware that a new storm had broken over our doorstep.

"Explain this to me, Clara," I said, sliding the file across the marble island. "Slowly. From the beginning."
Clara gripped her mug with trembling hands, blowing softly across the surface. "Nathan and Linda aren't just greedy social climbers. Linda runs an underground syndicate that targets successful, independent single mothers across the country. They look for women with real estate equity, established businesses, and children who crave a father figure."
She pointed to a highlighted name on one of the police reports.
"Look at victim number one: Elena Vance—no relation to you, pure coincidence. She was a tech entrepreneur in Seattle. Married Nathan after a whirlwind six-month romance. Within a year, her company was liquidated, her house was foreclosed, and she died under 'mysterious circumstances' from an accidental prescription overdose. Nathan inherited everything through a secret trust."
My stomach churned. The memory of Nathan’s smooth smile, his gentle way with my children, his casual talk of futures and forever—it all curdled into something monstrous.
"If this syndicate is so powerful," I asked, my voice sharpening with corporate steel, "how is Nathan currently sitting in a federal holding cell?"
"Because your public takedown broke their operational protocol," Clara said grimly. "You didn't just dump him; you exposed their entire financial blueprint on live national television and handed federal investigators a silver platter of API logs and audio files. Linda’s bosses—the anonymous financial backers behind their operation—are furious. They don't care about Nathan anymore. They care about you because you possess data that could crack their entire money-laundering network."
The hair on the back of my arms stood up.
"You're saying... they're coming for me?"
May you like
Before Clara could answer, the overhead kitchen lights flickered violently, then died.
Total darkness swallowed the room.
