Chapter 9 - The Siege at Midnight"Stay down," I whispered instantly, my survival instincts kicking in with cold precision.

I grabbed Clara and pulled her and her little boy beneath the heavy mahogany kitchen island. My heart hammered against my ribs, but my mind was laser-focused. The smart-home security system beeped softly on my wrist-mounted tablet, casting an eerie blue glow across the floorboards.

Motion detected: Perimeter fence, North Gate. Motion detected: Side patio glass.

They hadn't wasted any time.

"Do you have a phone?" I whispered to Clara.

"In my bag on the counter, but the signal is jammed—they're using a micro-jammer," she breathed, tears streaming down her face.

"It's fine. My house runs on an independent local mesh network." I tapped the emergency override on my tablet, punching in the master security code.

Suddenly, a loud crash echoed from the front hallway. The sound of heavy boots stomping across the hardwood floor shattered the silence of the night.

"Sharon!" a deep, raspy voice called out from the darkness of the living room, mocking and casual. "We know you're here! Come out, hand over the flash drive with the API logs, and nobody in this house gets hurt—not you, not your precious little brats upstairs!"

The mention of my children sent a surge of primal, incandescent rage through my veins that completely extinguished any lingering fear.

Nobody touches my children.

I crept silently away from the island, gesturing for Clara to stay put. I slipped out through the butler’s pantry toward the back stairs. The security monitor on my tablet showed two masked intruders moving through the ground floor, equipped with tactical gear and thermal-imaging goggles.

They thought they were hunting an ordinary woman. They didn't know my home was built like a high-security corporate vault.

I reached the top of the stairs just as Ben stepped out of his bedroom, rubbing his eyes, wearing his favorite basketball hoodie.

"Mom? What's going on? The power went out—"

I clamped a hand over his mouth gently, pulling him into the shadow of the linen closet. "Listen to me very carefully, Ben. There are bad men downstairs. I need you to take your sisters into the attic panic room right now, lock the heavy steel door, and do not open it for anyone unless you hear my voice saying the secret phrase."

Ben’s sleepy haze vanished instantly, replaced by fierce, unwavering clarity. "What's the phrase?"

"Never mess with a mother protecting her home," I whispered.

"Got it. Go, Mom." He didn't hesitate, sprinting silently down the hall to wake his sisters.

I turned back toward the dark hallway, a cold smile touching my lips as I pulled a heavy titanium-alloy wrench from my tool belt. The hunters had become the hunted.
