Chapter 2 - THE SYNDICATE’S SHADOW

"Don't touch it."

A cold, clipped command echoed down the alleyway. The scavenger froze, his hand hovering inches from the silver pendant. Stepping out of the swirling dust came a tall, imposing figure draped in a sleek, obsidian trench coat. A low-profile cybernetic visor covered the left side of his face, pulsing with a faint crimson light that scanned Leo’s crumpled form and then locked onto the glowing pendant.

"Captain Vance," the scavenger stammered, scrambling backward and dropping his weapon. "I—we didn't know this sector had a high-tier asset—"

"You were about to violate Directive 9," Vance said smoothly, his voice devoid of human warmth. He didn't look at the scavenger; his cybernetic eye remained fixed on Leo. "Secure the boy. And bring the artifact. The Director will want to examine this personally."

Before Leo could roll away, heavy synthetic gloves hoisted him into the air like a ragdoll. Panic surged through his veins, unlocking a desperate adrenaline rush. He thrashed, kicking wildly, but it was useless against the augmented strength of his captor.

As they dragged him toward a sleek, matte-black armored transport idling at the end of the ruined street, Leo caught a glimpse of his reflection in the vehicle's dark, bulletproof glass. His face was gaunt, his eyes hollow, but behind his pupils flickered a strange, unnatural golden spark—a reflection of the pendant pulsing violently in the guard's pocket.

They threw him into the back of the transport. The heavy doors slammed shut with a hydraulic hiss, plunging the interior into a suffocating red-tinted gloom.

Inside, sitting across from him in the dimly lit cabin, was a girl slightly older than him. She wore a tattered hacker’s jacket covered in obsolete tech patches, and her wrists were bound with heavy magnetic cuffs. She didn’t look afraid; she looked furious.

"First time?" she whispered bitterly, nodding toward Leo's trembling hands.

Leo swallowed hard, his voice barely a rasp. "Where... where are they taking us?"

"To the Core," she whispered, leaning forward so her sharp eyes pierced the dim light. "They aren't saving us, kid. They’re building an army. And that little toy in your pocket? That’s the key to the whole damn cage."
