The wind howled like a dying god over the skeletal remains of District 4. Ten days had passed since the night the sky broke open, yet the air still tasted of sulfur and wet ash. Leo sat huddled beneath the shattered concrete awning of what used to be a bustling corner bakery, his bare feet pulled tight against his chest. His clothes were stiff with dried mud and someone else's blood—or perhaps his own; he couldn't remember anymore. / Chapter 5 / 8

Chapter 5 - THE REBELLION OF THE RUINS

With a wave of Leo’s hand, the heavy magnetic cuffs binding Maya snapped open with a shower of blue sparks. She stumbled forward, staring at Leo in utter disbelief.

"Leo... what are you?" she whispered.

"I'm the update," Leo said, his voice echoing with a dual resonance that sounded like a chorus of thousands.

Chaos erupted. Alarms blared across the subterranean facility as red emergency lights strobed violently. Scores of elite tactical guards poured into the amphitheater, raising their pulse rifles to open fire.

"Kill them!" Thorne screamed, panic finally cracking his icy composure. "Destroy the boy if you must, but retrieve the core!"

Before the first trigger could be pulled, Leo slammed his bare foot against the metal floor. A shockwave of pure digital energy rippled outward through the subterranean foundation. Every automated security turret, camera, and automated defense drone in the complex instantly shifted its targeting reticle away from the children and locked onto the Directorate guards.

Friendly fire protocols overridden. Target: Hostiles, the system announced.

The turrets opened fire with deafening precision, neutralizing the guards in seconds without harming a single civilian or worker in the facility.

Maya grabbed a dropped assault rifle from the floor, a wild grin breaking across her face. "Remind me never to play chess with you, kid! Come on, we need to get to the main transmitter!"
