CHAPTER 3 â The Little Girl Who Remembered Everything

Emilyâs mother, Sarah, refused to look at the police chief.
Her hands trembled as she pointed at the frozen video on the screen.
âThat night⊠he was there.â
The room went silent.
Police Chief Roland Hayes, the most trusted man in the city, slowly stood up.
âSarah, youâre traumatized. You donât know what youâre saying.â
But the Pit Bull suddenly lifted his head.
A low growl rolled from his chest.
Not at the officers.
Not at the detectives.
At Hayes.
Emily stepped closer to the dog and whispered,
âShadow remembers you.â
Everyone turned toward her.
Sarah covered her mouth.
For seven years, Emily had blocked out the night she disappeared as a toddler. Her mother had always told people it was a kidnapping attempt, but the truth was worse.
Emily had been taken by men who ran an underground dog-fighting business.
They used stolen children to control the dogs.
And Shadow had been trained to fightâŠ
Until the night he chose to protect a child instead.
Emily touched the scar across Shadowâs face.
âThey hurt him because he wouldnât bite me.â
The detective replayed the final clip.
A masked man stepped into frame and removed his mask.
It was Chief Hayes.
Then Hayes smiled and said,
âDestroy the dog. Destroy the childâs memory. No witnesses.â
Before anyone could react, the lights in the station went out.
A gunshot exploded in the dark.
And when the emergency lights came back onâŠ
May you like
Chief Hayes was gone.
So was Emily.
