CHAPTER 5 – The Fire That Changed Everything

The basement erupted into chaos.
Smoke poured through the narrow corridors as flames raced across the leaking gas. Concrete cracked under the intense heat, and terrified children screamed from every direction.
Detective Miller grabbed Emily and pulled her toward the stairs.
"Run! Don't look back!"
But Emily twisted free.
"Shadow!"
The Pit Bull hadn't escaped.
He stood in front of the last steel cage, barking furiously at the frightened little boy trapped inside.
The lock refused to break.
The fire spread closer.
The ceiling groaned.
Sarah sobbed.
"Please... come back!"
Shadow ignored her.
With one final burst of strength, he hurled his body against the rusted cage door again...
And again...
On the fourth impact, the hinges snapped.
The little boy stumbled out crying.
Shadow gently nudged him toward Detective Miller.
"Take him!"
Miller lifted the child into his arms.
But before anyone could reach Shadow...
A burning support beam crashed between them.
The explosion threw everyone backward.
The entire basement collapsed.
Dust and fire swallowed everything.
Emily's scream echoed through the church.
"SHADOW!!"
When firefighters finally extinguished the flames hours later, all they found beneath the rubble was the broken chain that had once hung around the dog's neck.
No body.
No trace.
Only silence.
The city mourned the dog everyone had once feared.
Television stations called him "The Hero No One Believed."
Flowers covered the church steps.
Children left handwritten letters.
One small note simply read:
"Thank you for saving us when no one else did."
Everyone believed Shadow had died.
Everyone...
Except Emily.
Every evening, she left a bowl of food outside her house.
"I know you'll come home."
May you like
People smiled sadly.
But she never stopped believing.
