CHAPTER 10 "The Final Verdict Was Only the Beginning… Because Colonel Hart Had One Last Surprise Waiting for the Prescott Family"

Six months later…

The federal courthouse in Charlotte was surrounded long before sunrise.

News vans stretched for three city blocks.

Veterans stood beside domestic violence advocates.

Former Prescott employees quietly gathered near the entrance.

Some had traveled across the country just to witness the day they had spent years believing would never come.

Inside Courtroom One, the atmosphere was almost silent.

No whispered conversations.

No confident smiles from expensive attorneys.

No powerful family posing for cameras.

Everything had changed.

Margaret Prescott entered wearing a plain gray prison uniform instead of designer silk.

The diamond earrings were gone.

The custom handbags were gone.

Even the carefully styled hair that had once appeared on magazine covers had been cut short.

For the first time in decades…

No one stood when she entered the room.

No one feared her anymore.

Brandon followed in handcuffs.

His shoulders, once squared with confidence, now sagged beneath the weight of multiple felony charges.

Financial fraud.

Witness intimidation.

Evidence destruction.

Conspiracy.

Then Ethan entered.

Unlike the others, he wasn't wearing handcuffs.

Months earlier, he had signed a full cooperation agreement with federal prosecutors.

His testimony, combined with Richard Prescott's recordings and Charles Bennett's evidence, had dismantled nearly every defense the family attempted to build.

He never looked toward his mother.

Margaret glared at him with pure hatred.

"You betrayed your own blood," she whispered.

Ethan answered quietly.

"No."

"I finally stopped betraying my conscience."

Across the courtroom, Emily sat beside Victoria.

She looked different now.

Healthier.

Stronger.

The bruises had disappeared.

The fear in her eyes had begun to fade.

She wore a navy-blue suit instead of the expensive dresses Margaret had always chosen for her.

It was the first outfit she had bought herself in nearly three years.

Victoria noticed Emily's hands were still trembling.

She reached over.

Without saying a word…

She squeezed them.

Just like she had done when Emily was five years old before her first day of school.

Emily smiled.

A real smile.

Perhaps the first genuine one in years.

Judge Eleanor Brooks entered.

Everyone rose.

After reviewing months of testimony, thousands of pages of evidence, and weeks of deliberation, she began reading the court's findings.

Her voice remained steady.

"The evidence presented demonstrates a sustained pattern of coercive control, financial exploitation, unlawful confinement, witness intimidation, document fraud, and conspiracy."

Every word echoed through the silent courtroom.

She continued.

"This court further finds that the defendants abused positions of wealth and influence to obstruct justice and silence victims."

Margaret stared straight ahead.

Expressionless.

As if refusing to acknowledge reality.

Then came the sentences.

Brandon Prescott was sentenced to eighteen years in federal prison.

Several corporate executives who had participated in the conspiracy received prison terms ranging from three to twelve years.

The Prescott Family Foundation was permanently dissolved.

Its remaining assets would be redirected by court order toward organizations supporting survivors of domestic violence and legal aid for abuse victims.

Finally…

Judge Brooks looked directly at Margaret.

"Margaret Prescott…"

"You have shown no remorse."

"You used power as a weapon."

"You viewed human beings as property."

She paused.

"This court sentences you to thirty-two years in federal custody."

The room remained completely silent.

Margaret slowly stood.

She looked toward Emily one last time.

"You think you've won."

Emily met her eyes calmly.

"No."

"I think your victims finally did."

Federal marshals stepped forward.

Without another word…

Margaret Prescott was led away.

She never looked back.

As reporters rushed outside to announce the verdict, Victoria thought the case was finally over.

Then her phone vibrated.

A secure message.

NEW EVIDENCE RECEIVED.

Attached was a photograph.

An old black-and-white image.

Richard Prescott.

Margaret.

A young child.

And another woman standing beside them.

Someone Victoria had never seen before.

The caption on the back of the photograph read:

"The real heir must never know the truth."

Victoria frowned.

"What real heir?"

Charles Bennett, standing nearby, looked at the image and suddenly turned pale.

"Oh my God..."

Victoria looked at him.

"You know who she is?"

Charles nodded slowly.

"I hoped this secret had died with Richard."

"What secret?"

He swallowed hard.

"The Prescott fortune..."

"...was never supposed to belong to Margaret's family."

Victoria felt the ground shift beneath her feet.

"What are you saying?"

Charles looked toward Ethan, who was speaking with federal agents outside the courthouse.

Then he whispered the words that changed everything.

"Someone else is still alive."

"The rightful heir to the Prescott empire."

"And if that person learns the truth…"

May you like

"The biggest battle of this entire story is only just beginning."
