CHAPTER 4 "The Press Conference That Was Supposed to Save the Prescott Family... Until One Nurse Walked In With the Missing File"

By noon, the Prescott family's crisis team had gone into full damage-control mode.
Three public relations firms.
Two former prosecutors.
One nationally known media consultant.
Their strategy was simple.
Attack Emily.
Discredit Colonel Victoria Hart.
Control the story before the evidence became public.
At exactly 2:00 p.m., cameras filled the ballroom of the Prescott Foundation headquarters in downtown Charlotte.
Crystal chandeliers glowed overhead.
Television crews lined the back wall.
Margaret Prescott stepped onto the stage dressed in ivory, wearing pearls that had belonged to her grandmother.
She looked composed.
Confident.
Untouchable.
"My family has always believed in truth," she began.
"Unfortunately, we are witnessing a tragic situation involving mental health and false accusations."
A carefully rehearsed pause.
"We ask the public to pray for Emily Prescott during this difficult emotional episode."
Not Emily Hart.
Emily Prescott.
Even now, Margaret was trying to claim ownership of her.
Across town, Victoria watched the broadcast from Emily's hospital room.
Emily lowered her eyes.
"They're doing exactly what they promised."
Victoria didn't answer.
She simply picked up her phone.
"Is she ready?"
The reply came almost instantly.
She's outside.
Back at the press conference, a reporter raised his hand.
"Mrs. Prescott, are you denying allegations that Emily was isolated and prevented from contacting her family?"
Margaret smiled.
"Absolutely."
"We have nothing to hide."
At that exact moment, the ballroom doors opened.
Every camera turned.
A woman in blue hospital scrubs quietly walked inside carrying a thick brown envelope.
No makeup.
No jewelry.
Just an employee badge clipped to her pocket.
Margaret's smile disappeared.
She recognized the woman immediately.
Nurse Angela Morris.
The same nurse who had admitted Emily two nights earlier.
Angela walked directly toward the microphones.
"I'm sorry to interrupt," she said calmly.
"But someone should hear what Emily told us before lawyers arrived."
Gasps rippled through the room.
Margaret's attorney immediately stood.
"This is highly inappropriate."
Angela ignored him.
She opened the envelope.
Inside were copies of Emily's intake forms.
Every injury had been photographed before the Prescott attorneys entered the hospital.
Bruises around both wrists.
Finger-shaped marks on her upper arms.
A partially healed rib fracture.
A concussion.
Most disturbing of all...
The emergency physician had written one sentence in bold.
Patient reports prolonged confinement, coercive control, threats, and physical abuse by spouse and members of spouse's family.
The ballroom exploded with questions.
"Mrs. Prescott!"
"Did your family threaten her?"
"Why were lawyers sent before police?"
Margaret tried to speak.
No one listened.
Television stations cut away from her prepared speech.
Breaking News banners filled every screen.
For the first time in thirty years...
The Prescott family was no longer controlling the narrative.
They were chasing it.
That evening, Ethan stormed into his mother's office.
"You said this would disappear!"
Margaret slammed a folder onto the desk.
"It still can."
"How?"
She looked toward the massive portrait of the Prescott family hanging above the fireplace.
"There is one person who can still bury this."
"Who?"
Margaret's expression hardened.
"Your grandfather."
Ethan's face changed instantly.
"No."
"We swore we'd never involve him."
"We don't have a choice anymore."
Neither of them noticed...
Standing silently outside the office door...
...the family butler had heard every word.
And for twenty-six years...
May you like
The butler had secretly been loyal to someone else.
