CHAPTER 2 "The Three-Word Message That Made Powerful Men Stop Sleeping"

At exactly 8:17 p.m., my phone vibrated once.

No ringtone.

No notification sound.

Just a single secure message.

EAGLE SHIELD ACTIVE.

Most people would have ignored those words.

The Prescott family certainly would have.

They believed influence came from money.

I had spent my entire career learning that real power came from information.

By the time Ethan Prescott poured himself a glass of twenty-year-old whiskey inside the family's Charlotte mansion, twelve different investigators had quietly received encrypted files.

No search warrants.

No headlines.

Not yet.

Just names.

Companies.

Properties.

Shell corporations.

Donation records.

Private flight logs.

One retired general owed me a favor.

A federal prosecutor owed him one.

And somewhere in Washington, an old promise made during a combat rescue operation was finally being repaid.

Meanwhile, I stayed beside Emily's hospital bed.

She hadn't slept.

Every time footsteps echoed in the hallway, she flinched.

I reached into my bag and removed something wrapped in blue cloth.

Her old childhood teddy bear.

Its fur was worn nearly smooth.

One button eye had been replaced after our Labrador chewed it years ago.

Emily stared at it.

Then burst into tears.

Not loud sobs.

The quiet kind that come after holding pain inside for too long.

"I'm sorry, Mom."

I frowned.

"For what?"

"I embarrassed you."

The words hit harder than any battlefield explosion.

"You think this embarrasses me?"

She nodded.

"They said strong women don't produce weak daughters."

I knelt beside her bed.

"Listen to me."

"You survived."

"That is not weakness."

"That is courage."

For the first time since I arrived...

Emily believed me.

Across town...

The Prescott family gathered around an enormous mahogany dining table.

Margaret lifted a crystal wine glass.

"This unpleasantness ends tomorrow."

Brandon laughed.

"Emily won't testify."

Ethan nodded.

"She never does."

Then the family attorney entered.

His face had gone pale.

He placed his briefcase on the table but didn't sit down.

Margaret frowned.

"What's wrong?"

He swallowed.

"We have a problem."

"What kind?"

"Three federal agencies requested financial records tonight."

Silence.

Margaret slowly lowered her wine glass.

"That's impossible."

"It already happened."

Brandon laughed nervously.

"Probably routine."

The attorney didn't smile.

"It isn't."

Then he opened his laptop.

Every smile around the table disappeared.

Because the first name listed under active federal review...

...wasn't Ethan Prescott.

It wasn't Brandon.

It wasn't even Margaret.

It was the Prescott Family Foundation.

The one organization they had always believed was untouchable.

Margaret whispered,

"Who did this?"

Far across the city...

I looked out Emily's hospital window.

Charlotte glittered beneath the night sky.

My phone vibrated again.

One sentence.

We found the guest house cameras.

I closed my eyes.

Video.

Not accusations.

Not opinions.

Evidence.

The Prescott family still believed they were protecting a reputation.

They had no idea...

May you like

...their own security system was about to become the witness that destroyed them forever.
