CHAPTER 7 "The Woman Everyone Feared Finally Broke... After One Question She Could Not Answer"

For twenty-seven years, Margaret Prescott had controlled every room she entered.

Boardrooms.

Courtrooms.

Political fundraisers.

Television interviews.

She never raised her voice.

She never panicked.

She simply smiled...

...and people moved aside.

But inside Interview Room Three of the federal building, something had changed.

The smile was gone.

Across the metal table sat Special Agent Daniel Reeves.

Beside him sat Assistant U.S. Attorney Karen Mitchell.

Neither seemed impressed by the Prescott name.

Karen slid another folder across the table.

"We've reviewed the surveillance footage."

Another folder.

"We've reviewed the financial transfers."

Another.

"We've reviewed testimony from seventeen current and former employees."

Margaret remained silent.

Then Daniel placed one final item in front of her.

Emily's wedding photograph.

Margaret frowned.

"What is this supposed to prove?"

Daniel looked directly at her.

"Nothing."

He paused.

"It simply reminds us who trusted you."

The room became painfully quiet.

Karen opened a tablet.

The screen displayed footage from the guest house.

Emily sat alone on the floor, crying.

The recording continued for hours.

No edits.

No interruptions.

At 11:42 p.m., Margaret herself entered the room.

She stood over Emily and calmly said,

"If your mother ever comes for you, no one will believe a hysterical little girl over the Prescott family."

Margaret slowly closed her eyes.

She had forgotten the cameras recorded audio.

Daniel leaned forward.

"Would you like to explain that statement?"

She didn't answer.

Instead, she asked for water.

For the first time...

The most feared woman in North Carolina needed a moment to compose herself.

Meanwhile, Ethan sat in another interview room.

He looked exhausted.

His expensive suit was wrinkled.

Dark circles framed his eyes.

Victoria entered without speaking.

The agents stepped outside, leaving them alone.

Ethan stared at the floor.

"I loved Emily."

Victoria's expression never changed.

"You loved controlling her."

"No."

"You loved being obeyed."

"I never hit her."

Victoria quietly placed several photographs on the table.

Bruises.

Medical reports.

Images from the guest house.

Security footage.

"You locked the door."

"You took her phone."

"You threatened her."

"You watched while your family broke her."

Ethan buried his face in his hands.

"I thought..."

His voice cracked.

"I thought this was how every Prescott marriage worked."

Victoria looked at him carefully.

"What did you just say?"

He froze.

"My father treated my mother that way."

"My grandfather treated my grandmother that way."

"I grew up believing wives were supposed to obey."

Victoria realized something disturbing.

Ethan wasn't inventing excuses.

He genuinely believed abuse was tradition.

Years of manipulation had shaped him into exactly what Margaret wanted.

A weapon disguised as a husband.

As Victoria stood to leave, Ethan whispered,

"Colonel..."

She stopped.

"My mother..."

He swallowed hard.

"...she's hiding something much worse."

"What?"

He looked toward the one-way mirror.

"They're protecting someone."

"Who?"

"I don't know."

"But this was never just about Emily."

That evening, federal investigators searched the Prescott estate.

In a locked basement archive beneath the mansion...

They found a steel vault.

Inside were decades of confidential family records.

But one shelf was completely empty.

Only a layer of fresh dust remained.

Someone had removed a box...

...just hours before the search warrant arrived.

Whoever took it...

May you like

...was still free.
