CHAPTER 1 – The Woman Everyone Looked Down On

The mansion had never been quieter.

Crystal chandeliers sparkled above a room filled with millionaires dressed in designer suits and glittering evening gowns. Every member of the Whitmore family had gathered after the death of billionaire Richard Whitmore, expecting to hear how his enormous fortune would be divided.

No one noticed the elderly housekeeper standing quietly near the wall.

Her name was Evelyn Brooks.

For forty-three years, she had cleaned every hallway, cooked every holiday dinner, and tucked every family secret into silence.

To them, she was invisible.

"Why is the maid still here?" Richard's eldest daughter, Victoria, whispered with a mocking smile.

"Maybe she's hoping Father left her a tip."

Laughter echoed across the marble hall.

Evelyn lowered her eyes.

She had heard worse.

The family's attorney stepped forward.

"Before Mr. Whitmore passed away, he left one final instruction."

Everyone leaned forward.

"There is one safe in this house that only one person is allowed to open."

Victoria smiled confidently.

"Obviously Father trusted me."

Her younger brother smirked.

"Or me."

The attorney slowly shook his head.

"No."

He turned toward the old housekeeper.

"Mrs. Brooks... Mr. Whitmore specifically instructed that only YOU may open the vault."

The room fell into complete silence.

"What?"

Victoria burst into laughter.

"This has to be some kind of joke."

"A maid? Opening Father's private vault?"

One cousin sneered.

"She probably can't even remember the combination."

Humiliated, Evelyn quietly walked toward the enormous steel vault hidden behind an antique painting.

Everyone expected her to fail.

Instead...

Without hesitating...

She placed her trembling fingers on the keypad.

Beep.

Beep.

Beep.

The massive steel door slowly unlocked.

May you like

The sound echoed through the mansion like thunder.

Nobody laughed anymore.
