CHAPTER 3 – The Man Behind the Door

The tall stranger stepped into the mansion slowly.
No one moved.
His eyes swept across the room, passing over the gold, the vault, the shocked relatives... until they stopped on Evelyn.
For a moment, the old woman could barely breathe.
Then he whispered,
"Mother?"
Victoria gasped.
"Mother?"
Evelyn covered her mouth as tears ran down her face.
The man walked toward her, his voice breaking.
"I waited my whole life to hear the truth."
His name was Daniel Brooks.
For forty years, everyone had believed Evelyn was just a servant.
But she had once been the woman Richard Whitmore truly loved.
And Daniel...
Was the son Richard's powerful family had forced him to abandon.
Victoria stepped forward, shaking with rage.
"This is impossible! Father would never leave everything to some hidden child!"
The attorney opened another document.
"Actually... he did."
He placed Richard's final will on the table.
"Daniel Brooks is the sole heir to the Whitmore estate."
The room exploded.
Screaming.
Accusations.
Threats.
But Daniel said nothing.
He only looked at Evelyn.
Then he turned to the family who had laughed at her for decades.
"My mother cleaned your rooms, served your dinners, and protected your name."
His voice grew colder.
"And every one of you treated her like dirt."
Victoria sneered.
"You think you can walk in here and take what belongs to us?"
Daniel looked at the open vault.
Then he smiled sadly.
May you like
"No."
"I came to return what never belonged to you."
