CHAPTER 2 — The Girl Everyone Wanted Thrown Out

Crystal chandeliers lit the ballroom like daylight.
A live orchestra played softly while waiters carried trays filled with champagne worth more than Emily earned in six months.
Every conversation stopped as she entered.
Not because she was beautiful.
Because she was different.
She walked carefully, trying not to attract attention.
Unfortunately...
Attention found her anyway.
Victoria Beaumont.
The self-proclaimed queen of high society.
Heiress.
Magazine cover model.
Future wife of billionaire investor Nathan Crawford.
She smiled politely.
The kind of smile that always came before humiliation.
"So..."
Victoria circled Emily slowly.
"Which charity sponsored you?"
More laughter.
Emily remained calm.
"I was invited."
Victoria laughed even louder.
"Oh, sweetheart..."
"You weren't invited."
"You were used."
The surrounding guests applauded.
One wealthy businessman raised his glass.
"I'll bet she's here hoping to marry rich."
Another woman sneered.
"Or maybe she's looking for leftovers."
Emily's cheeks burned.
Still...
She refused to cry.
She simply touched the small silver pendant hanging around her neck.
The only thing her mother had ever left behind.
Victoria noticed it immediately.
She grabbed the necklace without permission.
"What an ugly little thing."
Emily instantly reached for it.
"Please don't."
Victoria ignored her.
She held the pendant up under the chandelier lights.
Suddenly...
Her smile disappeared.
The ballroom lights reflected off the tiny engraving hidden beneath decades of scratches.
A symbol.
A lion.
A crown.
And beneath it...
One single letter.
H.
Victoria frowned.
She had seen that crest before.
Only once.
On the private seal of the Harrington family.
Impossible.
Before she could think further...
A deep voice echoed across the silent ballroom.
"Take your hands off that necklace."
Every guest froze.
The orchestra stopped playing.
Slowly...
Richard Harrington himself descended the grand staircase.
His eyes were locked on the pendant.
But they weren't filled with anger.
They were filled with tears.
The eighty-year-old billionaire walked directly past senators...
past celebrities...
past billionaires worth billions...
Until he stood face-to-face with the poor waitress everyone had mocked.
Then, before anyone could understand what was happening...
He slowly dropped to one knee.
May you like
And whispered words that would destroy every secret the Harrington family had buried for more than twenty years.
"I've spent two decades searching for you..."
