CHAPTER 3 — The Necklace That Froze the Ballroom

No one breathed.
The eighty-year-old billionaire remained on one knee, staring at Emily as tears streamed down his weathered face.
"I've searched for you for twenty years..."
The words echoed through the ballroom.
Every billionaire.
Every celebrity.
Every reporter.
Every member of the Harrington family stood frozen.
Emily instinctively stepped backward.
"I... I think you've mistaken me for someone else."
Richard Harrington slowly shook his head.
"No."
"I prayed every single day that I hadn't."
He carefully reached toward the silver pendant but stopped before touching it.
"May I?"
Emily hesitated before removing the necklace and placing it into his trembling hands.
The old man turned it over.
With shaky fingers, he pressed against the tiny lion crest.
Click.
The pendant opened.
A gasp swept across the room.
Hidden inside was an old faded photograph.
A smiling young woman held a newborn baby wrapped in a white blanket.
Beside them stood a much younger Richard Harrington.
The same eyes.
The same smile.
The same family crest.
Richard closed his eyes.
"I gave this necklace to my daughter on the day she disappeared."
The room exploded with whispers.
"What?"
"He had a daughter?"
"I thought she died!"
Victoria's face drained of color.
Nathan Crawford stared at Emily in disbelief.
But before anyone could speak...
A sharp voice cut through the silence.
"He's lying."
Everyone turned.
A graceful woman in an emerald gown stepped forward.
Her diamond necklace alone was worth millions.
It was Evelyn Harrington.
Richard's younger sister.
The woman who had controlled the Harrington Foundation for nearly two decades.
She smiled calmly.
"My brother is elderly."
"His memory isn't what it used to be."
Then she looked directly at Emily.
"You found that necklace somewhere."
"You came here to steal our family's fortune."
The crowd immediately began whispering again.
Maybe she was right.
After all...
How could a poor waitress suddenly become the missing heir to America's richest family?
Emily's hands trembled.
"I don't want anyone's money."
"I don't even know what's happening."
Richard's voice thundered across the ballroom.
"Enough!"
For the first time that night...
The legendary billionaire looked furious.
"If anyone insults this young woman again..."
"They answer to me."
Silence returned.
But Evelyn wasn't frightened.
Instead...
She smiled.
A smile so cold it sent chills through the room.
Because she knew something Richard didn't.
If Emily truly was alive...
May you like
Everything Evelyn had built over the last twenty years...
Was about to disappear.
