CHAPTER 4 — LILY FINALLY WOKE UP

The intensive care room was almost completely silent.

Machines beeped steadily beside Lily's bed.

Her tiny hand rested in mine.

Hours had passed without movement.

Then...

Her fingers squeezed mine.

Just once.

I jumped to my feet.

"Lily?"

Her eyelashes fluttered.

Slowly, painfully, she opened her eyes.

"Mommy..."

I broke down before she finished the word.

Marcus called for the nurse while I kissed her forehead over and over.

The doctor smiled.

"She's waking up."

Detective Collins arrived only after the medical team confirmed Lily was stable enough to answer a few simple questions.

She knelt beside the bed.

"Lily, sweetheart... can you tell us what happened?"

Lily frowned.

She looked frightened.

"Grandma gave me sleepy juice."

The room became still.

"What happened after that?" the detective asked gently.

Lily hugged Mr. Bunny tighter.

"Aunt Vanessa said we were playing hide-and-seek."

My heart stopped.

"They wrapped me in a blanket."

She paused.

"I couldn't open my eyes."

Marcus looked away, fighting tears.

Lily continued in a tiny voice.

"I heard Grandma say..."

She swallowed hard.

"...'Put her somewhere nobody will find her until after the party.'"

The detective quietly switched off her recorder.

She already had enough.

Outside the hospital room, officers were waiting.

One approached Detective Collins.

"The forensic team just finished searching the house."

"What did they find?"

"The security cameras."

My father had insisted for years that the cameras no longer worked.

He had lied.

The hard drive was still recording.

Every minute.

Every hallway.

Every entrance.

Detective Collins immediately requested the footage.

Less than two hours later, everyone gathered in the police station's viewing room.

The timestamp read 6:42 A.M.

The video showed my mother carrying Lily downstairs while she appeared barely conscious.

Seconds later, Vanessa opened the back door.

Together, they disappeared toward the catering building.

Neither woman looked frightened.

Neither tried to help my daughter.

Then the final frame appeared.

Both women returned alone.

Empty-handed.

Vanessa closed the door...

Smiled...

And adjusted Emma's birthday crown before greeting the first guests.

The room fell silent.

An officer quietly muttered,

"They thought no one would ever see this."

Detective Collins closed the laptop.

"I think we're done asking questions."

Outside the station, patrol cars were already pulling into my parents' driveway again.

This time...

They weren't there to investigate.

May you like

They were there to make arrests.

But none of us yet knew that the biggest betrayal in our family's history was still waiting inside my father's office safe.
