CHAPTER 5 — THE SAFE THAT DESTROYED MY FATHER'S LIES

The police returned to my parents' house before sunset.

This time, no one was pretending everything was normal.

The birthday balloons still floated above the dining table, but the cake had collapsed under the afternoon heat. Half-melted frosting dripped onto the floor like the party itself had finally surrendered.

Detective Collins handed my father a search warrant.

"We need access to your office."

His jaw tightened.

"You've already searched the house."

"We haven't searched the safe."

For the first time that day, I saw genuine fear in his eyes.

"It only contains business records."

"Then you won't mind opening it."

He didn't move.

Two officers stepped forward.

"If you refuse, we'll have a locksmith open it."

My father slowly entered the study and knelt beside an old oak bookshelf. Hidden behind a framed family portrait was a steel safe.

His hands shook as he entered the code.

The heavy door clicked open.

Inside were stacks of documents, several envelopes, a bundle of cash... and dozens of USB drives carefully labeled by year.

One envelope immediately caught Detective Collins' attention.

Across the front, written in my father's handwriting, were six chilling words:

OPEN ONLY IF SHE FINDS OUT.

My heart pounded.

Collins carefully unfolded the documents.

The first page was a contract.

The second was a financial agreement.

The third...

Made the room go completely silent.

It was a signed arrangement between my father and a private investigator from twenty-six years earlier.

The investigator had been paid to convince the court that my biological mother was mentally unstable.

Every accusation had been fabricated.

Every witness had been bribed.

Every report had been falsified.

My mother began sobbing.

"It wasn't supposed to go this far..."

Detective Collins looked up sharply.

"What do you mean?"

She covered her face.

"We were only supposed to keep the inheritance."

My father shouted.

"Stop talking!"

But it was too late.

Everything was collapsing.

Another officer plugged one of the USB drives into a laptop.

Thousands of scanned bank records appeared on the screen.

Money had been transferred every year from the trust created in my name.

Small amounts at first.

Then hundreds of thousands.

Finally...

Millions.

For over two decades, my parents had quietly stolen from the inheritance that legally belonged to me.

Marcus stared at the screen in disbelief.

"They didn't just hide the truth."

"They've been stealing your future."

Then Detective Collins opened the final envelope.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

It wasn't addressed to me.

It was addressed to Lily.

The date was only three weeks old.

My father had already been planning something.

Something that mentioned my daughter by name.
