CHAPTER 8 — THE BOX BENEATH THE GARAGE

The concrete floor had been broken open just before midnight.
An anonymous tip had led investigators to a section beneath my father's workshop.
No one expected to find anything.
Instead...
They uncovered a sealed metal lockbox wrapped in heavy plastic.
Inside were old journals, financial ledgers, cassette tapes, and a small velvet pouch containing a wedding ring engraved with two initials:
E & D
Evelyn gasped.
"My fiancé's ring."
The ring had supposedly been buried with Daniel after the accident that killed him.
Someone had stolen it.
Detective Collins placed another item on the table.
A notebook.
It belonged to my late grandfather—the man who had created the trust.
His final handwritten entry read:
If anything happens to me, my granddaughter Emily must receive everything directly. I do not trust Richard or Elaine with her future.
Richard.
My adoptive father.
Elaine.
My adoptive mother.
Neither of them had honored his wishes.
Instead, they had hidden the notebook beneath the garage for decades.
The detective opened the final cassette recording.
Static filled the room.
Then an elderly man's voice emerged.
"If you're hearing this... I may already be gone."
Everyone listened in complete silence.
"I've discovered Richard has been moving money from Emily's trust. I've reported my concerns to my attorney."
The recording crackled.
"If anything happens to me, it won't be an accident."
The tape suddenly stopped.
Detective Collins slowly looked around the room.
"We've confirmed something important."
She paused.
"The official investigation into your grandfather's death was closed as a heart attack."
She placed the recorder back into its evidence bag.
"But after hearing this..."
"We're reopening the case."
A chill ran through my entire body.
For years, I believed my parents had lied to protect money.
Now it appeared someone may have committed an even darker crime to obtain it.
As Marcus drove us back to the hospital, Lily quietly reached for my hand.
"Mommy..."
"Yes, sweetheart?"
"Bad people can't hide forever... right?"
I looked at my daughter in the rearview mirror.
Then at Evelyn sitting beside her.
For the first time in years, I felt something stronger than fear.
Hope.
Because the truth was finally coming into the light.
And somewhere inside the growing mountain of evidence...
May you like
Waited the answer to the oldest question of all:
Who was willing to kill to keep our family secret buried?
