CHAPTER 7 — THE MOTHER WHO NEVER STOPPED LOOKING

I almost turned around.
For twenty-six years, I had imagined this moment a thousand different ways.
None of them happened in the lobby of a hospital after my parents had been arrested.
She was sitting alone near the window.
Simple gray sweater.
Silver hair pulled neatly behind her shoulders.
A small leather folder rested on her lap.
The moment she saw me, she stood.
Neither of us moved.
Neither of us spoke.
Then tears rolled down her face.
"You have my father's eyes," she whispered.
I couldn't answer.
Every question I'd carried since childhood suddenly felt too heavy.
She slowly reached into her purse and removed a faded photograph.
A young woman sat in a hospital bed, smiling while holding a newborn wrapped in a pink blanket.
On the back was a handwritten note.
Emily Grace Hart. Born at 2:17 A.M. I will love you forever.
My knees weakened.
"I kept hoping someone would tell you I existed," Evelyn said softly.
"They never did."
We sat together for nearly two hours.
She told me everything.
She had been twenty-one when I was born.
My biological father had died in a construction accident three months before my birth.
After his death, his parents created a family trust in my name.
It wasn't meant to make anyone rich.
It was meant to guarantee that I would always have a future.
Then everything changed.
While Evelyn recovered from childbirth, she signed what she believed were temporary guardianship papers.
Instead...
She unknowingly signed documents that permanently transferred custody.
By the time she realized the truth, I was already gone.
She fought in court.
She hired lawyers.
She appealed.
Every case ended the same way.
The court believed forged reports claiming she was unstable and unfit to raise a child.
"I never stopped searching," she said, sliding a stack of letters toward me.
"I wrote every birthday."
Every envelope carried my name.
Every one had been opened.
None had ever reached me.
Tears blurred my vision.
"You loved me all this time?"
She smiled through her tears.
"There was never a single day that I didn't."
Marcus quietly entered the waiting room carrying Lily, now awake and wrapped in a hospital blanket.
Lily looked curiously at Evelyn.
"Mommy... who's the nice lady?"
Before I could answer, Evelyn knelt carefully beside her.
"I've been hoping to meet you for a very long time."
Lily studied her face for a moment.
Then, with the simple honesty only children possess, she wrapped her tiny arms around Evelyn's neck.
"You're crying," Lily whispered.
Evelyn laughed through her tears.
"They're happy tears."
For the first time in my life...
I knew what it felt like to be welcomed instead of merely tolerated.
But our reunion lasted only minutes.
Detective Collins walked into the lobby carrying another evidence folder.
"I need both of you to come with me."
Her expression told me this wasn't over.
Not even close.
