CHAPTER 6 — THE LETTER THEY NEVER WANTED ME TO READ

The room was so quiet that I could hear the paper shaking in Detective Collins' hands.
She looked at me.
"I think you should read this."
I unfolded the letter.
Every word felt colder than the last.
If my granddaughter Lily remains in the picture, Emily will eventually discover the trust and begin asking questions. Once Marcus marries her, everything becomes more complicated. The child is the weakness. Remove the child from the celebration, delay everything, and we'll have enough time to finish transferring the remaining assets.
I stopped reading.
I couldn't breathe.
There was no signature.
There didn't need to be.
I recognized my father's handwriting.
Marcus gently took the page from my hands, his face turning pale.
"He planned this..."
Detective Collins nodded grimly.
"It appears the events this morning were not spontaneous."
An officer entered the room carrying another evidence box.
"We found something else."
Inside was a small digital recorder hidden beneath the false bottom of the safe.
The technician pressed play.
My father's voice filled the room.
"We cannot let Emily meet Evelyn. If the truth comes out, Vanessa loses everything."
Another voice answered.
It was my mother's.
"What about Lily?"
A long pause.
Then my father replied with words that still haunt me.
"Without the child, Emily becomes easier to control."
The recording ended.
No one spoke.
Even the officers looked stunned.
Vanessa suddenly jumped to her feet.
"I didn't know he meant that!"
She pointed toward my father.
"He told us Lily would only be hidden until the party ended!"
My father glared at her.
"You've just admitted your part."
Realizing what she'd done, Vanessa covered her mouth.
Too late.
Detective Collins quietly signaled the officers.
One by one, they stepped forward.
My father was handcuffed first.
Then my mother.
Finally, Vanessa.
As they were escorted toward the front door, my father turned back to look at me.
There was no apology.
Only anger.
"You've destroyed this family."
I met his eyes without looking away.
"No."
"You destroyed it the day you decided money mattered more than a little girl."
Hours later, I returned to the hospital.
Lily was asleep, holding Mr. Bunny tightly against her chest.
A nurse approached me with a small smile.
"There's someone waiting for you downstairs."
"Who?"
She handed me a business card.
The name printed across the front made my hands tremble.
EVELYN HART
Underneath, in neat handwriting, someone had added just one sentence:
"I've waited twenty-six years to meet my daughter."
May you like
I had finally found the truth.
But I had no idea that meeting Evelyn would reveal an even darker secret about the night I was born.
