Chapter 10 - THE FINAL LEDGERSix months later, the autumn leaves had turned to brilliant shades of gold and copper along the stone walls of the Walker estate.

I sat alone on the marble terrace, a cup of black coffee resting on the iron table beside me. The morning air was crisp, carrying the distant, steady hum of the shipping cranes down at the harbor.

My phone buzzed on the table.

A single notification from the federal correctional facility upstate: Inmate 849-021 has completed intake processing. No visitors requested.

I swiped the notification away, letting the screen go dark.

Footsteps sounded softly on the gravel path behind the terrace. I didn't turn around. I didn't need to.

"The quarterly audit report from Zurich just came in," Evelyn said as she walked up, pulling a light cashmere shawl around her shoulders. She looked healthier now, the heavy burden of the family's secret corruption finally lifted from her shoulders. "Every account is balanced to the last cent. No anomalies."

"Good," I said, turning to look at her with a warm, genuine smile. "As it should be."

Evelyn leaned against the balustrade, looking out over the manicured boxwood hedges and the curved drive where, half a year ago, a black SUV had rolled through the gates carrying a man who thought he could have everything.

"You know," Evelyn murmured, a faint, knowing smile touching her lips, "Charles left a final codicil in his private safe before he passed last month. He didn't tell anyone about it until yesterday."

"Oh?" I raised an eyebrow. "What did it say?"

Evelyn reached into her pocket and pulled out a small, old-fashioned brass key—the key to the primary estate vault that had remained locked since the founding of the company.

She placed it gently on the table beside my coffee cup.

"He specified that the key should only go to the person who proved they could carry the ledger without dropping the pen," Evelyn said softly. "He always hated weak accountants."

I looked down at the brass key. It gleamed in the morning sunlight, heavy, bright, and entirely secure.

I picked it up, closed my fingers around it, and smiled.
