Chapter 17 - THE NEW DYNASTYThe iron gates of the Walker estate opened automatically as my car glided up the curved driveway under the blanket of a starry winter night.

When I stepped into the grand foyer, the warmth of the fireplace in the main parlor washed over me like an embrace.
Evelyn was sitting in her usual armchair, reading a leather-bound volume of international maritime law, while a classical symphony played softly from the antique speakers in the corner.
She looked up as I walked in, closing the book and setting it on the side table.
"Harrison?" she asked simply, reading the expression on my face before I even removed my coat.
"He tried to plead coercion," I said, walking over to pour myself a cup of hot tea from the silver pot. "The federal task force picked him up this afternoon. His firm is dissolving by the end of the week."
Evelyn nodded slowly, her expression calm, serene, and entirely untroubled.
"Another branch pruned from a diseased tree," she said softly. "The company is stronger now than it has been in fifty years, Clare. The board is stable, the international routes are secure, and our name is no longer associated with criminal syndicates."
"Because we stopped pretending that loyalty is inherited," I said, walking over to stand beside the marble fireplace, looking at the oil portraits of generations of Walkers staring down from the high walls. "Loyalty is earned through honesty, discipline, and execution."
Evelyn smiled—a warm, genuine expression that reached all the way to her eyes.
"My husband always said that the Walker name was just a piece of paper until someone came along and gave it real value," Evelyn murmured. "For a long time, I thought Ethan was that person. I was wrong."

She reached out, resting her frail, warm hand over mine.
"You are the one who saved the ledger, Clare. And you are the one who keeps it."
