Chapter 4 - THE DESPERATE ALLIANCEBy noon, the Walker Tower boardroom had emptied of everyone except Ethan, Vanessa, and myself.

The security guards stationed at the double doors stood like stone statues, their black suits stark against the white marble hallway.

Vanessa was pacing near the floor-to-ceiling windows that looked out over the gray expanse of the city. Her hair was slightly disheveled now, the immaculate composure cracking under the weight of frozen bank accounts and federal subpoenas.

"You think this makes you clever," Vanessa spat, turning around to face me. "You think destroying Ethan’s career makes you some kind of hero. But you don't know what we were building. You don't know what’s coming."

"Enlighten me," I said, sitting back down at the table and opening my laptop.

"The Marseilles contracts aren't just shipping routes," she said, her voice dropping into a harsh, conspiratorial hiss. "They belong to the Syndicate. If those terminals don't open by Friday, the people backing Hail Meridian won't just file lawsuits, Clare. They don't use lawyers."

Ethan dropped into a chair across from me, burying his face in his hands. His shoulders shook slightly.

"She's right, Clare," Ethan muttered through his fingers. "I... I made mistakes. I got in deep with the Mediterranean shipping pool. They financed the expansion when the board blocked our capital requests. I had to use company funds to pay the interest, or they would have... they would have destroyed everything."

I looked at him—at the man I had trusted for seven years, the man who had slept beside me while plotting to mortgage our entire life to keep a former fiancée afloat in a sea of illicit debt.

"And so you came home," I said quietly, "put your arm around her in front of your mother and grandfather, and expected me to sit quietly in the library while you turned my home into a safehouse for your criminal partners."

"I was trying to protect you!" Ethan yelled, his head snapping up, his eyes bloodshot and desperate. "If you had just stayed out of it—if you had just accepted the arrangement—none of this would have happened!"

"Protection," I repeated. The word tasted like ash.

I closed my laptop with a sharp snap.

"Here is what is going to happen, Ethan," I said, standing up and buttoning my jacket. "The federal investigators are downstairs. They have the hard drives from Hail Meridian and the server logs from your private accounts. You have forty-eight hours to cooperate fully with the prosecutor's office, hand over every offshore key, and sign the final divorce decree relinquishing every remaining asset to the Walker Family Trust."

Vanessa lunged forward, her hands slamming onto the table. "And if he doesn't?"

"Then he goes to prison for wire fraud and international racketeering," I said, walking toward the double doors. "And you go with him."

As the security guards pulled the heavy doors open for me, I heard Vanessa scream—a high, frantic sound that echoed off the marble walls like breaking glass.
