Chapter 7 - THE SIEGE OF THE WALKER ESTATEThe lights in the grand parlor flickered once, twice, and then died completely as the main breaker was tripped from the exterior utility box.

Emergency red-tinted backup LEDs blinked to life along the baseboards, casting long, crimson shadows across the Persian rugs and the oil portraits of generations of Walkers.
"Stay behind the mahogany desk," I whispered to Evelyn, my hand sliding into the velvet pocket of my blazer where my phone was already dialing a direct emergency relay to the federal task force dispatch.
"Clare, the security panic room is through the library," Evelyn urged, her grip firm on my arm despite her age. "If they breached the gates—"
"They didn't come here to negotiate, Evelyn," I said, pulling my phone away as the screen flashed No Signal. Jamming devices. Localized frequency blockers.
From the foyer, a heavy boot kicked against the parlor's solid oak door.
Crack.
The lock held, but splintered wood cascaded across the floorboards.
"Mrs. Walker!" a harsh, unfamiliar voice called out from the darkness of the hallway. "Open the side terrace doors! You have five seconds before we clear the room!"
I didn't answer. I stepped backward toward the heavy marble fireplace, my hand closing around the solid brass poker resting in its stand. It was heavy, cold, and balanced like a fencing foil.
The second kick blew the door off its hinges. It crashed inward with a deafening thud.
A man stepped through the smoke and red emergency light. He wore a dark tactical vest, his face obscured by a black balaclava, holding a suppressed automatic rifle at low ready.
Behind him stood Vanessa Hale.
Her cashmere coat was gone, replaced by a utility jacket, her hair pulled back into a tight tactical ponytail. The polished, untouchable corporate mistress was entirely gone, replaced by someone desperate, cornered, and infinitely more dangerous.
"Clare," Vanessa said, stepping past the armed operative into the red-lit room. Her voice was cold, flat, and dripping with venom. "You really should have taken the settlement when you had the chance."
I gripped the brass poker tighter, my feet planted firmly on the rug.
"You think killing me in this house solves anything, Vanessa?" I asked, my voice cutting through the hum of the red emergency lights. "The federal task force has every digital ledger, every offshore key, and every wire transfer backed up on secure servers in Zurich and Washington. Even if I die tonight, your indictment drops at 8:00 AM tomorrow."
Vanessa laughed—a short, brittle sound that echoed off the high ceiling.
"You still don't understand, do you?" She took another step forward, gesturing to the masked operative. "We don't need the ledgers anymore. Once the estate catches fire from an 'accidental electrical fault,' the insurance investigation closes the books permanently. And Ethan? Ethan will inherit everything as the grieving widower."
"Where is Ethan?" Evelyn’s voice rang out from the shadows near the desk, cold and steady as steel.
Vanessa turned her head slightly, sneering into the darkness. "Your grandson is downtown playing the broken, betrayed husband for the federal agents, Mrs. Walker. He’s giving them a convenient scapegoat—a few low-level maritime brokers who can take the fall while he walks away clean."
"He thinks he walks away clean," I said, stepping out from the shadow of the mantelpiece.
I raised my right hand, revealing the small digital override fob glowing with a steady, green LED light.
Vanessa’s eyes widened in sudden, absolute horror.
"What is that?" she hissed.
"The master broadcast relay," I said, smiling faintly. "While you were busy breaking down the front door, my phone wasn't dialing dispatch, Vanessa. It was broadcasting every encrypted file, every offshore confession, and every audio recording of your voice directly to the federal prosecutor's live terminal."

Vanessa lunged forward, screaming for the operative to fire.
The man raised his rifle—just as the massive iron-reinforced French doors of the East Library blew inward with an explosive roar.
