Chapter 3 - THE BOARDROOM AMBUSHThe mahogany boardroom on the forty-second floor of Walker Tower smelled of old leather, expensive espresso, and panic.

At 9:00 AM sharp, the double doors swung open.
Ethan walked in, flanked by two corporate attorneys from downtown and Vanessa Hale, who had somehow managed to secure a tailored charcoal pantsuit that looked like armor. Ethan looked like he hadn't slept; his skin had an ashen gray undertone, and his tie was slightly askew.
He stopped short when he saw who was sitting at the head of the long table.
Charles Walker was gone. In his place sat Evelyn Walker, flanked by three senior partners from Vance & Sterling, with me sitting directly at the center seat—the seat reserved for the Chief Executive Officer.
"What is the meaning of this?" Ethan’s chief attorney, a slick man named Harrison with silver-rimmed glasses, stepped forward. "Mr. Walker remains the managing director of Walker Logistics. This meeting was called under false pretenses—"
" Sit down, Harrison," Evelyn said, her voice dropping the room into absolute silence.
Ethan stared at me, his eyes wide with disbelief and a rising, desperate fury. "Clare. What are you doing in that chair? This is a corporate board meeting. You have no voting rights on the operating board—"
"Check your email, Ethan," I said, leaning back and resting my hands on the polished wood.
Every phone around the long table buzzed in unison.
Harrison pulled his device from his pocket, his eyes darting across the screen as he read the notification from the state corporate registry.
"That's... that's impossible," Harrison stammered, looking up at Ethan. "The primary shares were transferred under an emergency marital injunction... Your wife holds controlling voting interest through the marital trust partition."
Vanessa stepped forward, her face hardening into a mask of pure venom. "This is a coup! It’s a domestic dispute brought into a corporate boardroom. You can't just hijack a multinational shipping firm because your husband wanted a separation!"
"It's not a separation, Vanessa," I said, standing up slowly.
I picked up a thick dossier from the table and tossed it across the polished wood. It slid across the surface and stopped directly against Vanessa’s leather briefcase.
"That is a criminal referral currently sitting on the desk of the Federal Prosecutor's Office," I said, my voice cutting through the heavy air. "Embezzlement of three point two million dollars in international relief funds, falsification of maritime manifestos, and corporate fraud involving Hail Meridian Transport."
Ethan’s face drained of every drop of color. He staggered backward, his hand catching the edge of a leather chair to steady himself.

"Clare..." he choked out, his voice cracking. "You... you can't do this to me. We were married. We built this together—"
"You built an empire of lies, Ethan," I said, looking down at him with absolute detachment. "And today, I’m repossessing the foundation."
