Chapter 14 - The Hidden Beneficiary

Julian scanned the top document, his face turning an alarming shade of pale.

“This... this is an internal transfer from the Ashford Charitable Foundation dated two weeks before the yacht fire,” Julian muttered, his fingers tracing a signature at the bottom of the page.

“Recognize the signature?” I asked, leaning over the desk.

Julian looked up, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. “Arthur Pendelton.”

The name hit the room like a physical blow. Arthur Pendelton was Ashford Capital’s current Chairman of the Board—the grandfatherly, widely respected elder statesman of New York finance who had presided over the company for thirty years, comforting me at my husband's supposed funeral and guiding the board through the transition after David took over.

“Arthur?” I breathed, the pieces suddenly clicking together into a horrifying puzzle. “He orchestrated the whole thing? He used David as a pawn to eliminate you, Julian, so he could control the voting blocks?”

“Not just control,” Julian said, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. “Pendelton wanted to strip the company’s core assets and sell them to a foreign conglomerate in Beijing. If I died, David would take the CEO seat, act as a puppet, and Pendelton would cash out for fifty billion dollars.”

Vanessa collapsed into a leather chair, sobbing hysterically. “He threatened me, Claire! Pendelton told me if I said anything about the board meetings from seven years ago, he’d make sure I disappeared the same way Julian did!”

Julian looked down at Noah, then turned his gaze to me. The betrayal in his eyes ran deep, but it was replaced instantly by cold, calculated fury.

“Arthur thinks he’s untouchable,” Julian said softly. “He’s chairing the emergency board meeting downstairs right now.”
