Chapter 9 - The Trial of Shadows

Three days later, the New York State Supreme Court hosted the most explosive preliminary hearing in city history.

David Vance stood at the defense table, shackled at the wrists and ankles, surrounded by six armed state troopers. The courtroom was packed to maximum capacity with journalists, billionaires, and federal prosecutors.

David’s lead council made a desperate final stand. “Your Honor! The prosecution’s case is built on absurd conspiracy theories! The man standing here is Grant Ashford! The DNA test proved he is an Ashford!”

Martin Bell stood up smoothly. “Your Honor, we request permission to call our primary witness to the stand.”

The heavy double doors at the back of the courtroom swung open.

Julian Ashford walked down the center aisle in full view of the world press. Cameras flashed frantically, turning the courtroom into a wall of white light. Beside him walked federal agents carrying the original, pristine medical records from Zurich, complete with verified fingerprint matches and dental records from before the yacht explosion.

David Vance lost all sanity. He began screaming incoherently, smashing his hand cuffs against the defense table. “He’s an imposter! I am Grant Ashford! I am the billionaire! You can’t take it from me!”

The judge slammed her gavel down repeatedly. “Order! Order in this court!”

Julian stood before the witness stand, pulled off his leather glove, and held up his right hand—showing the identical crescent mark on his wrist that matched the mark behind Noah’s ear.

“My name is Julian Ashford,” he said clearly into the microphone. “And the man sitting at that table is the murderer who stole my life.”
