Chapter 6 - The Serpent’s Confession

Vanessa stared at me in shock. “You... you bought the jet company?”

“I have spent seven years preparing for this week, Vanessa,” I said, setting the glass in front of her. “Every move Grant made, every contract he signed, every dollar he stole from Julian’s accounts—I documented it all with the help of Julian’s original legal team.”

Vanessa fumbled inside her handbag and pulled out a small, encrypted voice recorder.

“He called me thirty minutes ago,” she whispered, pushing the device toward me. “He didn’t know I was recording. He threatened to kill me if I testified about the medical records. But then... he said something else. Something about the night of the explosion.”

I pressed play.

Grant’s panicked, distorted voice filled the room: “Vanessa, you listen to me! I did what I had to do! Julian was going to ruin everything! He was going to give half the firm to that worthless girl! I didn’t just detonate the boat—I made sure he was locked in the lower cabin! If he survived, it’s a miracle, but I’ll finish the job if I have to!”

I closed my eyes as a tear finally slipped down my cheek. Hearing him confess to the attempt on my husband’s life sent a chill straight to my soul.

“This is the missing link,” I said, looking at Vanessa. “This proves premeditated attempted murder.”

“I’ll give it to the D.A.,” Vanessa pleaded, her voice trembling. “Just promise me you won’t destroy me, Claire. I was just his mistress... I didn’t know!”

I leaned in close. “You knew enough to stand beside him in that room while I was eleven days postpartum. You wanted my life. Now, you’ll help me strip him of his.”
