Chapter 18 - The Aftermath

By the end of the week, the restructuring of Ashford Capital was complete.

The global media swarmed the sidewalks outside the Manhattan headquarters, broadcasting non-stop coverage of the corporate coup that had unseated a multi-generational criminal conspiracy. Headlines across the Wall Street Journal and Financial Times blared: The Resurrection of Julian Ashford: How One Woman Brought Down Wall Street’s Darkest Empire.

Vanessa was sentenced to two years of probation and community service in exchange for her full testimony against Arthur Pendelton, quietly leaving New York for a fresh start on the West Coast.

David Vance and Arthur Pendelton sat in adjacent holding cells at the Manhattan Detention Complex, awaiting a joint federal trial that legal experts predicted would result in multiple life sentences.

Inside our newly renovated penthouse overlooking Central Park, the evening air was calm and quiet.

I stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass window, watching the city lights twinkle against the twilight sky. A pair of warm arms wrapped around my waist, and Julian rested his chin softly on my shoulder.

“Are you still thinking about that day at the divorce firm?” Julian asked softly, reading my mind.

I smiled, turning around in his embrace and resting my hands against his chest. “I was thinking about how crazy it is that eleven days postpartum, I walked into a room believing my life was over—and instead, I walked out and took over the world.”

Julian laughed softly, pressing a gentle kiss to my forehead. “You didn't just save our family, Claire. You became the shield that protected our legacy.”

From the adjoining nursery, a soft, sleepy coo echoed down the hallway.
