Chapter 2 - The Stepmother’s Fury

"I have never been so insulted in my entire life," Rebecca hissed, pacing the length of the private suite. Her heels clicked sharply against the floor. "A delinquent breaks into a high-security ICU, accuses me of poisoning your daughter, and you just stand there like a statue!"
Robert didn't look at her. He was staring at the floor, where the wild daisies Joey had dropped lay scattered.
"He knew her name, Rebecca," Robert said quietly. "He knew about her private tutoring. He knew she was feeling dizzy before she collapsed."
"Of course he did!" Rebecca scoffed, crossing her arms. "Lily is the daughter of a billionaire. Her medical situation has been in the newspapers for months. The boy is probably looking for a payout. He’s trying to scam us, Robert. And you're falling for it because you're desperate."
Dr. Spencer stepped forward, adjusting his glasses. "Mrs. Blackwood is correct, sir. Lily's condition is a textbook case of a rare, progressive autoimmune encephalopathy. The idea that she is being poisoned is medically absurd. The machines are the only thing keeping her organs from failing."
Robert looked at the doctor. "Then why isn't she getting better? Why is she wasting away?"
"These things take time," Dr. Spencer said smoothly. "But if you continue to allow these kinds of disruptions, I cannot guarantee her stability."
"I want the room secured," Robert ordered, his voice cold. "No one enters without my personal permission. Not even the regular nursing staff. Only you, Spencer, and my wife."
"Of course," Rebecca said, her voice softening as she walked over to wrap her arms around Robert’s neck. "We only want what's best for Lily, darling. Why don't you go back to the hotel and get some sleep? I'll stay here and watch over her."

Robert looked into his wife's beautiful, perfect eyes. For the first time in three years of marriage, he felt a sudden, icy chill run down his spine.
"No," Robert said, gently but firmly removing her hands from his shoulders. "I'm staying right here."
