Chapter 6 - The Flatline Trap

The rhythmic hiss-click of the machine stopped.

Suddenly, a loud, continuous alarm pierced the air. The heart monitor’s steady beep... beep... beep... began to wildy accelerate.

Beep-beep-beep-beep—

"Robert, look what you've done!" Rebecca screamed, grabbing his arm. "She’s dying! Plug it back in! You're killing your own daughter!"

The red numbers on the monitor began to plummet. Lily’s oxygen saturation dropped from 98% to 85%. Then 75%.

Her chest didn't move. She wasn't breathing.

"Robert!" Rebecca cried, but deep inside, a dark, hidden part of her was rejoicing. He’s doing it himself, she thought. He’s killing her. I won't even have to face charges. They’ll blame his mental breakdown.

Dr. Spencer watched the monitor with sweat pouring down his face. "Sixty percent! Mr. Blackwood, her heart is going to arrest! Turn it back on!"

Robert stood frozen, his eyes locked on Lily. Please, he prayed. Please, Lily. Fight it. Let your body wake up.

The monitor let out a single, solid, horrifying tone.

Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep.

A flatline.

"She’s gone," Rebecca whispered, letting go of Robert's arm. She quickly pulled out her phone, her fingers flying across the screen. "I’m calling the police. You killed her, Robert. You finally did it."
