Chapter 7 - The Awakening and the Arrest

"I wouldn't make that call if I were you, Mrs. Blackwood," a calm voice said from the corner of the room.

The door to the adjoining bedroom opened. Marcus, Robert’s head of security, stepped out, holding a high-definition video camera. Behind him were two federal agents in dark suits.

Rebecca froze, her phone slipping from her fingers and cracking on the floor.

Suddenly, a gasp echoed through the room.

It wasn't a mechanical gasp. It was a wet, desperate, human intake of air.

Robert spun around.

Lily’s eyes were wide open. She was coughing, her chest rising and falling violently as her body desperately fought to clear the remaining fluid from her lungs. The flatline on the monitor suddenly jumped back into a wild, erratic, but beautiful heartbeat.

Beep... beep... beep...

"Daddy?" Lily whispered, her voice barely a thread. She looked around the room, her eyes landing on Rebecca with a look of pure, instinctual fear. "She... she made me take the pills. She said if I didn't, she would hurt you."

"I know, baby. I know," Robert sobbed, rushing to the bedside and wrapping his arms around his daughter. He cried tears of pure joy, holding her tight as her small hands weakly gripped his shirt.

The federal agents stepped forward, placing heavy metal handcuffs on Rebecca’s wrists. She began to scream, cursing at Robert, her elegant facade completely disintegrating as she was dragged out of the room alongside a trembling, silent Dr. Spencer.
