Chapter 4 - The Confrontation in Suite 1142

By 8:00 AM, Robert was back at the hospital. He had not slept a single wink. The toxicology report was burning a hole in his inner jacket pocket.

The results had been terrifying. The pills contained a highly sophisticated, synthetic neurotoxin. In small doses, it mimicked the symptoms of a degenerative brain disorder. But the most horrifying detail was how it interacted with the hospital's specific respirator medication. When combined with the high-oxygen therapy Lily was receiving, the toxin became highly reactive, trapping her brain in a permanent, artificial coma.

The machines were keeping her sick. The boy had been entirely, medically correct.

Robert walked into Suite 1142. Rebecca was already awake, sitting by the bed, reading a fashion magazine. Dr. Spencer was checking the ventilator settings.

"Good morning, Robert," Rebecca said, offering a sweet smile. "Did you sleep well?"

"I didn't sleep," Robert said. He walked over to the ventilator, staring at the digital screen. "Spencer, I want you to turn off the machines."

The room went dead silent.

Dr. Spencer froze, a stylus hovering over his tablet. "I... I beg your pardon, Mr. Blackwood?"

"You heard me," Robert said, his voice deadly calm. "Unplug the ventilator. Turn off the IV pumps. Let her body breathe on its own."

"Are you insane?!" Rebecca shrieked, jumping to her feet. "If you do that, she will die in minutes! Dr. Spencer, tell him!"

"Mr. Blackwood, this is medical suicide," Dr. Spencer said, his face flushing red. "I cannot allow you to do this. As her primary physician, I will have to contact the hospital board and file for emergency custody to protect the patient. You are not in your right mind."

"I am in my perfect mind," Robert said. He pulled the printed toxicology report from his pocket and threw it onto the table in front of them. "And I know exactly what you two have been doing."
