Chapter 1 - THE TRAP SPRUNG"What Exactly Did It Record?"The silence inside the hospital room was suffocating.

Ethan’s polished, confident facade cracked right in front of Dr. Rachel Carter. For three years, he had operated under the delusion that he held every card, that I was just his meek, isolated wife who would bow her head and endure whatever punishment he and his mother deemed fit.

He didn't realize the trap had been set months ago.

“What did it record?” Ethan repeated, his voice dropping an octave, losing its smooth charm. “Rachel—Dr. Carter—whatever this is, my wife is unwell. She’s paranoid. If she put a camera in our house, it’s proof of her deteriorating mental state—”

“It recorded everything, Ethan,” Rachel interrupted, her voice ice-cold as she stepped between him and my bed. “It recorded your mother heating a pot of peanut oil to boiling point. It recorded her walking over to Sarah while her back was turned. It recorded her pouring it directly onto her shoulder, and when Sarah tried to escape, Margaret shoved the pot against her chest.”

Margaret let out a sharp, theatrical gasp, clutching her pearls. “That is a lie! That is a frame-job! She edited it!”

“It was a live-streamed, cloud-encrypted feed, Margaret,” Rachel said, pulling out her tablet and tapping the screen. “The footage was automatically uploaded to a secure server the moment the camera detected high-heat signatures and physical distress. And because Sarah’s medical directive was triggered the moment she was admitted to the ICU, my team was legally obligated to notify local authorities and her legal counsel.”

At that exact moment, heavy footsteps echoed down the hallway. Two uniformed officers from the Precinct Financial & Special Victims Unit stepped through the yellow curtains. Behind them stood a tall, middle-aged man in a charcoal suit, holding a leather briefcase.

It was Arthur Vance—my father’s old senior partner and the chief trustee of my family’s estate.

Ethan’s face went completely drain of color. He recognized Arthur instantly.

“Ethan Vance,” the lead officer said, pulling out a pair of handcuffs. “And Margaret Vance. You are both under arrest for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, conspiracy to commit murder, and attempted murder. You have the right to remain silent...”

“Wait! This is a mistake!” Margaret shrieked as an officer grabbed her wrists. “I am an old woman! My daughter-in-law is a lunatic! Ethan, tell them!”

Ethan didn't defend his mother. Instead, his eyes darted to Arthur Vance, then back to my motionless body on the bed.

“Sarah,” Ethan whispered, his voice trembling—not with remorse, but with pure, unadulterated fear. “Sarah, please... tell them we can talk about this. The house... the trust... we can fix this.”

I slowly opened my eyes. Through the fog of heavy painkillers and the searing agony radiating across my collarbone, I looked directly into his eyes.

I didn't utter a single word. I simply offered him the smallest, coldest smile he had ever seen.

As the officers dragged both Ethan and Margaret out into the corridor, their frantic protestations echoing off the sterile walls, Arthur Vance walked to the side of my bed. He reached down, gently patting my uninjured hand.

“The wheels are turning, Sarah,” Arthur said quietly. “Every bank account Ethan thought he controlled has been frozen as of ten minutes ago. The eviction notice for your mother-in-law is being served to the house tonight. And the evidence file... it’s already on the District Attorney’s desk.”

I swallowed hard, my throat dry. “Did he... take the bait on the offshore transfer?”

Arthur smiled darkly. “He swallowed it hook, line, and sinker. Ethan didn't just try to kill you tonight, Sarah. He signed his own execution order in the financial courts.”
