Chapter 3 - THE MOTHER’S WEAPONVenom in the DepthsWhile Ethan was drowning in federal fraud charges, his mother, Margaret, was attempting to play a far more sinister game.

Margaret wasn't just an overbearing mother-in-law; she was a master manipulator who had spent thirty years living off wealthy men before leeching onto her son. From her cell in the county jail, she realized that Ethan was facing decades behind bars. She needed a scapegoat, and she needed one fast.
She requested an emergency meeting with the District Attorney, claiming she had evidence that I was the mastermind behind the entire scheme and that Ethan was an innocent victim of my psychological torture.
When the DA refused to meet her without my legal counsel present, Margaret resorted to her final weapon: the media.
Through a smuggled phone call to a sleazy tabloid journalist, Margaret dropped a bombshell narrative: “Billionaire Heiress Frames Devoted Mother and Husband in Elaborate Insurance Scam!”
The headlines went viral overnight. Social media exploded with debates. Paparazzi began swarming the hospital entrances, trying to get a photo of my bandaged face. Photos of me looking frail and sickly from months of subtle poisoning—which Ethan had been sneaking into my daily tea—were leaked to make me look unhinged.
Sitting in my hospital room, watching the news anchors speculate on whether I was a victim or a psychopath, my skin burned under the tight compression bandages.
Rachel walked into the room, holding an iPad with a grim expression. “It’s trending worldwide, Sarah. Margaret’s narrative is gaining traction because people love a trashy rich-family scandal.”
I stared at the television screen, where an old photo of me and Ethan looking happy at a charity gala was displayed.
“She thinks she’s playing media chess,” I said, my voice hoarse but steady. “She thinks if she creates enough public outrage, the DA will hesitate to prosecute.”
“What are we going to do?” Rachel asked.
I sat up slowly, enduring the sharp bite of pain across my chest. “We give them the real story. But not through a press release.”
I looked at Rachel. “Call Detective Miller. Tell him I’m ready to release the toxicology reports.”

Rachel’s eyes widened. “The heavy metals?”
“Yes,” I said, a cold fire burning in my chest. “Ethan wasn't just gaslighting me, and Margaret didn't just pour boiling oil on me on a whim. They were slowly poisoning me with thallium for eight months to make me look mentally incompetent before the final 'accident.' Let’s see how the media handles the video footage paired with a murder-by-poison attempt.”
