Chapter 4 - THE TOXICOLOGY REVELATIONPoison in the TeaForty-eight hours later, my legal team held a live press conference in front of the municipal courthouse.

Instead of Arthur Vance speaking, he stepped aside and brought out Dr. Rachel Carter, alongside Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Aris Thorne.

The bank of cameras flashed relentlessly as Dr. Thorne adjusted his microphone.

“For the past six months, Mrs. Sarah Vance was treated for symptoms resembling severe early-onset dementia, chronic fatigue, and neurological tremors,” Dr. Thorne announced to the crowd of journalists. “However, blood tests taken immediately upon her admission to the ICU following the thermal assault revealed extreme concentrations of Thallium—a odorless, tasteless heavy metal historically known as 'The Poisoner's Poison.'”

The crowd gasps. Microphones were shoved forward.

“Are you saying she was being poisoned?” a reporter shouted.

“The levels of Thallium found in Mrs. Vance’s bloodstream indicate continuous, low-dose administration over a period of at least eight months,” Dr. Thorne stated calmly. “Had she not suffered the oil burns and been brought to our emergency facility under strict medical isolation, she would have suffered total organ failure and cardiac arrest within another thirty days. It would have been virtually undetectable in a standard autopsy.”

Arthur Vance stepped back up to the podium, holding a clear plastic evidence bag containing a silver teapot retrieved from my home by police forensics.

“This teapot, used exclusively by Margaret Vance to serve Sarah her daily tea, contained traces of liquid Thallium sulfate,” Arthur announced, his voice booming through the speakers. “Furthermore, search warrants executed on Margaret Vance’s private storage unit revealed three unlabelled vials of the substance purchased via illegal online channels.”

The narrative flipped instantaneously.

Within hours, the media frenzy turned into a torrent of rage against Margaret and Ethan. The woman who had pretended to be a weeping, frail mother was now exposed as a calculating, cold-blooded murderer.

In her jail cell, watching the broadcast on the communal television, Margaret was swarmed by other inmates who had been watching the news. Realizing she was no longer safe, she suffered a panic attack and had to be placed in protective custody.

But the real blow was yet to come.

Back in his federal holding cell, Ethan received a visitor he never expected to see: me.
